What Kind of Chocolate Milk Do You Drink?

Mapleview Farms, baby. It's a local dairy in Orange County, just West of Chapel Hill, and they make some just fantastic organic/no-RBGH products - their full-cream chocolate milk is just loaded with foodgasms. The best part is, recent studies indicate that chocolate milk is the equal of just about every sports recovery drink in terms of post-workout effectiveness.

Milk, loaded with good stuff. Vitamins, calcium, high quality protein. Chocolate milk adds sugar to that, which is something you're gonna find in any energy drink or bar. What the f**k? Enjoy. Just don't drink too much.

Actually, I was serious about the recovery - the supposed optimal ratio for a post-workout recovery snack is 4:1 carbs to protein, and chocolate milk, with the added sugars, comes in right about there, and it's both cheaper and tastier than just about any of the fancy recovery drinks. Indiana University actually did a real study on it, which I thought was pretty swanky.

And now they're saying that, for active adults, the formerly prescribed protein quantity of .4 grams/pound of body weight is probably too low. Gimme some more chocolate milk, baby.

That sounds awfully low. If you're strength training, the common wisdom is 1g protein per pound of lean body mass, per day. That's *lean* body mass, not total body mass.

Yeah, I think you're right, but that's what you read in a lot of older books - remember, of course, that I'm coming from the perspective of an endurance geek, so maybe I've been reading different things than you, but of course, they've really started to try and push runners and cyclists into doing more resistance work as well over the last decade or so.

BTW, I think the .4g/lb is for total body mass, but I could be wrong.

I was about to say that the training in question makes a huge difference in those guidelines. You're right, nobody thinks you need 1g/lb. lean mass for endurance training. That's mostly what the serious strength training guys use. Same thing for post workout recovery stuff. 4carb-1protein might be in vogue for endurance training, but nobody thinks in those terms for strength training. Weight lifters are a little bit concerned about replenishing glucose stores after an intense session, so they pay attention to getting some carbs. But not many would go for that many carbs, I don't think.

Anyway, that stuff is in constant flux. Theories change almost monthly, it seems. But the hard core guys are still doing 1g protein per 1lb lean body mass, as far as I know.

The ice cream is good, too. Hell yeah, it does! One of the best we've got locally is Guernsey Farms in Michigan. Their chocolate milk is a motherf**ker.

Good chocolate/dairy mergers are road-trip worthy. Detroit, here I come!

I drink chocolate milk all the time. Any kind, but usually Quik. It has replaced the morning coffee I was wasting so much money on at Starbuck's.

Or, if you prefer: Chocolate milk is for children. And for the child inside the adult. I don't drink chocolate milk, but sometimes I just gotta have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Our boys love "chocolate tornados," which we mix in a low-torque "Moo Mixer," a battery-powered, Holstein-spotted device with a plastic blade.
Hershey's syrup + local milk. You can get away with using a lot less chocolate syrup, as the froth of the "tornado" takes center stage.

Chris,

There is no shame in admitting that "our boys" should be replaced by "I."

Searching online for a Moo Mixer because it sounds cool,
Larry

One of my few disappointments in my trips to the states has been the absence of good flavoured milk. Down Under, flavoured milks (especially Iced Coffee are very popular especially amongst guys - women think they are fattening I guess and that perception cant be shaken - unlike the milk which gets a frothy foamy consistency when that happens - milkshakes baby).

Iced Coffee down here is made on milk whereas in some of the US it is just Iced coffee and the Chocolate Milk were too sweet - almost sickly sweet actually, well to these tastes.

Its like trying to get a good cup of coffee in the states - almost impossible. From LA to NY I have tried and been directed by connoissuers to this place or that and with the possible exception of one place in Toledo, Ohio (owned by a family of italian extraction) have been dissappointed. Most american coffee is weak and in most cases the beans are bitter, slightly burned in flavour, Then again, this is the country that gave the world Maxwell House. There must be good coffee in the US somewhere - I just never found it.

Your perspective is interesting to me, Cobber. Many Japanese and Canadian folks have complained to me that the usual brew served in the USA is too strong. Can you send us a photo of your favorite coffee hangout in Oz?

P.S. Have you been to Seattle?
