RIP Laura freakin' Branigan

I think they got her num-ber...

NEW YORK - Laura Branigan, a Grammy-nominated pop singer best
known for her 1982 platinum hit "Gloria," has died. She was 47.

Branigan died of a brain aneurysm Thursday in her sleep at her
home in East Quogue, said her brother Mark Branigan. He said she
had complained to a friend of a headache for about two weeks
before she died, but had not sought medical attention.

"Gloria," a signature song from her debut album "Branigan,"
stayed atop the pop charts for 36 weeks and earned her a Grammy
nomination for best female pop vocalist, the first of four
nominations in her career.

She also made television appearances, including guest spots on
"CHiPs," and in the films "Mugsy's Girls" and "Backstage."

Branigan released seven albums after her debut "Branigan,"
including "Solitaire," "Self Control," and "How Am I Supposed to
Live Without You," which was co-written with Michael Bolton. Her
songs also appeared on soundtracks for the films "Flashdance"
and "Ghostbusters."

Branigan was born July 3, 1957, and grew up in Brewster, N.Y.
She attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan. During
the late 1970s, she toured Europe as a backing vocalist for
Canadian singer and songwriter Leonard Cohen. She signed as a
solo artist with Atlantic Records in 1982.

After her run of success in the 1980s, her releases in the early
1990s attracted little attention. In 1994, she sang a duet with
David Hasselhoff (news) called "I Believe" for the soundtrack of
the television show "Baywatch." She released a 13-track "Best of
Branigan" LP the next year.

After the death of her husband, Lawrence Kruteck, in 1996,
Branigan stopped performing but returned to the stage in 2001.
In 2002 she starred as Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway musical
"Love, Janis," which earned her rave reviews.

Branigan recently had been working on material for a new
release.

She is survived by her mother, two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services were scheduled for Monday.

What a respectful thread title. Like, if that's how you feel, why bother?

That's sad. She was very young.

I always thought she had a nice voice, and some of those cheesy Europop-like songs from the early 80's seem downright charming nowadays. I remember liking her version of 'Der Kommisar' (which, I believe, was not played on American radio) when I was a kid. Oh, and she made a guest appearance on 'Knight Rider', which at the time was my absolute favorite show.

I am merely expressing my discontent at the passing of a figure from my youth.

Oh, and that's what I used to call her as a kid. Laura freakin' Branigan. Like, "this radio station is crap. All they play is The Police, Rod Stewart, and Laura freakin' Brannigan."

Now hoping I beat everyone to announcing the demises of Phil-Fucking-Collins and Billy "Ass-Monkey" Joel,

Moné

That's a damn shame.

In Mone's defense, you can't be too flippant for our generation. The generation that preceded us is the most improperly sensitive generation in Earth's history, so we'll be different, thanks.

I liked the song "Gloria." I remember watching Laura Brannigan singing it from a float in the Macy's Thanksgiving parade.

RIP. How is Kim Carnes doing?

You thought The Police were crap, like the other two?

I'll admit that perhaps their big hits were a trifle overexposed.

Apparently it is Kim Carnes, and yes, she is still living. In fact, she may even be available for your next special event!

It's 80s ephemeral pop. The tunes check in but they don't check out.

Francesca: I dunno. I got nothin' here.

Rita: I actually have come around to Branigan's "Gloria," but I still hate The Police. Can't fucking stand them.

What about the chick who sang "Kids In America?" (whoah-oh)

Hello?? "Self Control" people. That was obviously her *best* work. I had such a crush on her as an 8-year-old boy.

It's very sad. RIP, Laura.

I never heard of her. 47 is pretty dammed young and that's a rotten way to die.

In 1982 I still had "Give Me Back My Bullets" turned up to 11, so I never heard all that much.

What the hell are you talking about? I was responding to you, not quoting you.

Christ, Laura freakin' Branigan. Even in death she causes trouble.

I was joking! I should have put a after the . But I didn't know that you were responding to me, not quoting me. I thought that you were misquoting Franki and me as a joke. I'll delete my damn post.

I did wonder why you hadn't used the Quote function.

I just looked up the lyrics. I was surprised to see that they read like this:

Gloria (Gloria)
I think they got your number (Gloria!)
I think they got the alias (Gloria!)
that you've been living under

Instead of "the alias" I always thought she was singing "Elliott." Was I the only one?
