Where does it end up?
Oh, at about $2500 for a 250gb ATA drive and a gig of RAM.

How does it make your PC look???????

For that level of performance? Inexpensive.

That's where I got the pricing from, Chris.
20" model, 1.8 ghz processor (hey, you were asking how it made *my* PC look), upgrading it to my GB of ram and hard drive level... okay, the Mac's processor speed and video card aren't anywhere near as good as mine (and neither is upgradeable), and the display is smaller, the sound isn't as good, and it has fuck-all for options... plus, I can't do any maintenance on it myself, I have to take it into an Apple store where they'll charge me two-three times more than it would cost for similiar PC repairs...
And yet, my whole rig cost about $300 dollars less.
But damn, the Mac *is* much cuter.

There's no reason to go up to 2 GB of RAM on that machine, since your performance will bottleneck at the processor or the video card (if you're playing computer games or doing rendering) anyway. Most current PCs have at least four USB and a couple of Firewire slots, and if not, the card doesn't cost that much.
Hey, I like OS X too, and it is easier and more functional than Windows, but this isn't a "casual user" machine. A G5 processor and a middling gamer's graphics card that's already out of date, for what? If you're experienced enough to take advantage of these things, there isn't anything you wouldn't rather do on a PC, which you could at least UPGRADE, giving it a longer purchase life. Otherwise, just get a freakin' iBook.

One thing Mac definitely has over PC. More hot chicks hang out at the Mac store, at least at the one in the Grove in Los Angeles. Every time I go in, I see at least three buxom young examples of female pulchritude. You'd think Apple pays them to be there. Wait a minute...
You want to talk worthy Mac machines, I would gladly accept a Power Mac G5 with the 2.5ghz processor and a Radeon 9600 XT, standard. Highest benchmarks across the board on everything except computer games using Direct X (which is just about all of them), which the Mac OS doesn't handle so well under OpenGL. Unfortunately, that doesn't start at $1299, it starts at three freakin' grand. My birthday is in March, Chris.

There are people who still own a Mac Cube?
Yes, "eventually." Why should you have to wait to be able to upgrade your machine? Why isn't the option to upgrade up from a middling card now to an ATI 9600 now? And can the user actually do it or do you have to take it to the Mac store? And what are the audio specs for the new iMac anyway? Other than the digital output, I couldn't find them on the website.
Chris, we agree on the OS. I just happen to think that Apple's hardware is overpriced, expensive to support, and except for the towers, almost impossible to upgrade, reducing it's potential shelf life. If you really support the idea of Mac becoming the OS standard, you should harrass them to make hardware that's less expensive and more functional. If they ever do, I'll be raising my iPod with you in defiance.

s the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra a "middling" card?
|
For gaming and video rendering, yes it is. It's actually on the low end for most benchmark testing. Most games are recommending at least the 5600 now.
If you're curious, check out www.tomshardware.com which does benchmark testing on all of the popular video cards.
And again, why no clue as to what sort of soundcard the new iMac has? Is it 5.1 compatible? Is it SurroundSound compatible? This is basic information.
Whether or not one thinks OS X can ever be the standard, Mac hardware is a frustrating thing for those of us who would like to see the Windows monopoly broken. Good OS, lousy equipment.

I hate Windows and that miserable company Microsoft.
In contrast, my imac is a wonderful computer, so easy to use, reliable, and a beautiful design. I'll never buy another Windows computer for my personal use again, after getting an imac two years ago. If my current one were not still so great, I would be sorely tempted by the new model.
