All time worst song lyrics

Phil Collins and America are hard to top. Collectively, these two artists have contributed enough songs with bad lyrics to fill a good sized CD box set. If I had to pick one head scratcher, though, this would be it:

GENESIS lyrics - "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight"

I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey, but it's alright
Like a load on your back that you can't see, ooh but it's alright
Try to shake it loose, cut it free, just let it go, get it away from me.

Cos tonight, tonight, tonight - oh, I'm gonna make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

I'm going down, going down, like a monkey, ooh but it's alright
Try to pick yourself up, carry that weight that you can't see,
Don't you know it's alright
It's like a helter skelter, going down and down, round and round
But just get it away from me - oh.

Because tonight, tonight, tonight - oh
We're gonna make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

I got some money in my pocket, about ready to burn
I don't remember where I got it, I gotta get it to you
So please answer the phone, cos I keep calling, but you're never home
What am I gonna do
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh
I'm gonna make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

You keep telling me I've got everything, you say I've got everything I want
You keep telling me you're gonna help me, you're gonna help me, but you don't
But now I'm in too deep
You see it's got me so that I just can't sleep
Oh get me out of here, please get me out of here
Just help me I'll do anything, anything
If you'll just help me get out of here.

I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey, ooh but it's alright
It's like a load on your back that you can't see,
Ooh don't you know that it's alright
Just try to shake it loose, cut it free, let it go
But just get it away from me
Cos tonight, tonight, tonight - oh
Maybe we'll make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

Please get me out of here
Someone get me out of here
Just help me I'll do anything, anything
If you'll just help get me out of here
Tonight - oh, I'm gonna make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

Yes tonight, tonight, tonight - oh,
Yes I'm gonna make it right, tonight, tonight, tonight - oh...

"I am," I said
To no one there
And no one heard at all
Not even the chair

"Isn't it rich, are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns.

Isn't it bliss, don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around
One who can't move
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns.

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours. [eeehhhh!!!]
Making my entrance again with my usual flair,
Sure of my lines;
No one is there.

Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear,
I thought that you'd want what I want,
Sorry my dear
But where are the clowns
There ought to be clowns
Quick send in the clowns

What a surprise!
Who could foresee
I'd come to feel about you
What you felt about me?
Why only now when I see
That you've drifted away?
What a surprise...
What a cliche'...

Isn't it rich, isn't it queer
Losing my timing this late in my career
And where are the clowns
Quick send in the clowns
Don't bother, they're here."

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We ve known each other since we
Were nine or ten
Together we ve climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and abc s
Skinned our hearts and
Skinned our knees
Goodbye my friend it s hard to die
When all the birds are singing
In the sky
Now that spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I ll be there
We had joy we had fun we had
Seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were
Just seasons out of time
Goodbye papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along
Goodbye papa it s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them I ll be there
We had joy we had fun we had
Seasons in the sun
But the wine and the songs like the
Seasons have all gone
We had joy we had fun we had
Seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like
The seasons have all gone
Goodbye michelle my little one
You gave me love and helped
Me find the sun
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on
The ground
Goodbye michelle it s hard to die
When all the birds are singing in
The sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there
We had joy we had fun we had
Seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed were
Just seasons out of time
We had joy we had fun we had
Seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the
Seasons have all gone
We had joy we had fun we had
Seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the
Seasons have all gone
We had joy we had fun we had
Seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the
Seasons have all gone

Go on with the wedding;
Don't bother 'bout me.
Let me be forgotten,
Or just a memory.
I'll love you, dear, always,
But he loves you, too.
So go on with the wedding,
God bless both of you.
(spoken)
I hadn't seen Jim in years.
He'd been reported dead.
Though Jim was my true love,
I soon would marry Fred.
The wedding march was beginning
When Jim appeared that day.
With a cry, I ran to him,
But they all heard Jim say....
Go on with the wedding,
Don't bother 'bout me.
Let me be forgotten,
Or just a memory.
I'll love you, dear, always,
But he loves you, too.
So go on with the wedding.
God bless both of you.
(spoken)
I stood there, torn between two loves,
My Fred and my Jim.
Jim was gone for so long,
Yet I knew I still loved him.
But then Fred showed his true love;
He wouldn't stand in our way.
He placed my hand in Jim's,
And they all heard him say....
Go on with the wedding.
Don't bother 'bout me.
Let me be forgotten,
Or just a memory.
I'll love you, dear, always,
But he loves you, too.
So go on with the wedding.
God bless both of you.

Do you want to be an angel,
Do you wanna be an angel
Do you wanna be a star
Do you wanna play some magic
On my guitar
Do you wanna be a poet
Do you wanna be my string
You could be anything

Do you wanna be the lover of another undercover
You could even be the
Man on the moon

Do you wanna be the player
Do you wanna be the string
Let me tell you something
It just don’t mean a thing

You see it really doesn’t matter
When you’re buried in disguise
By the dark glass on your eyes
Though your flesh has crystallised
Still...you turn me on

Do you wanna be the pillow
Where I lay my head
Do you wanna be the feathers
Lying on my bed
Do you wanna be the cover
Of a magazine
Create a scene

Every day a little sadder
A little madder
Someone get me a ladder

Do you wanna be the singer
Do you wanna be the song
Let me tell you something
You just couldn’t be more wrong

You see I really have to tell you
That it all gets so intense
From my experience
It just doesn’t seem to make sense
Still...you turn me on

I'd single this line out.

Also, in the Genesis song, I have a big problem with this:

I'm going down, going down, like a monkey, ooh but it's alright

I don't know what "going down, going down, like a monkey" is, but I'm not willing to accept the premise that "it's alright." Dig?

Baby, I'm a-want you
Baby, I'm a-need you....

Now dig this. Undo the contractions and you get:

Baby, I am a-want you
Baby, I am a-need you....

Now what the fuck is that supposed to mean?

And when I go away
I know my heart can stay with my love , it’s understood
It’s in the hands of my love , and my love does it good
Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo , my love does it good

And when the cupboards bare
I’ll still find something there with my love
It’s understood , it’s everywhere with my love
And my love does it good

Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo , my love does it good

Oh I love oh wo......my love
Only my love holds the other key to me
Oh....my love oh...my love
Only my love does it good to me

Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo , my love does it good

Don’t ever ask me why , I never say goodbye to my love
It’s understood , it’s everywhere with my love
And my love does it good

Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo , my love does it good

Oh I love oh wo......my love
Only my love does it good to me
Woooooooooooooh

From A Distance : Lyrics (Bette Midler) -
Who Def. left HER cake out in the rain!

"From a distance, the world looks blue and green
and the snow-capped mountains white.
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
and the eagle takes to flight.

From a distance there is harmony
and it echoes through the land.
It's the voice of hope, it's the voice of peace,
it's the voice of every man.

From a distance, we all have enough
And no one is in need.
There are no guns, no bombs, no diseases,
No hungry mouths to feed.

From a distance we are instruments
Marching in a common band
Playing songs of hope, playing songs of peace
They're the songs of every man.

God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance.......[He's Damn Lucky!]

Songwriter Julie Gold is the perpetrator of this one. Only Nancy Griffith's live version is the least bit listenable. Unbelievably, Crosby, McGuinn and Hillman recorded this tune fresh for the Byrds box set that came out a few years ago. This is what happens when rock stars give up heroin for breakfast in favor of Cracklin' Oat Bran.

It took a great producer (Phil Spector), great songwriters (Gerry Goffin & Carole King), and a great girls group (The Crystals) teaming up to make this gem:

He hit me, and it felt like a kiss.
He hit me, but it didn't hurt me.
He couldn't stand to hear me say
that I had been with someone new.
And when I told him I had been untrue....
He hit me, and it felt like a kiss.
He hit me, and I knew he loved me.
Cause if he didn't care for me,
I could have never made him mad.
And he hit me, and I was glad.
Baby, why won't you stay? (repeat)
Cause when he took me in his arms,
with all the tenderness there is.
He hit me, and he made me feel.
Baby, why won't you stay? (repeat)

Can I come over tonight?
What do you think I wanna do?

Can I come over tonight?
I say we will have a real cool time tonight
