petrova - --^2zų¤° ---Year's Cycle
Evelyn Petrova - 'year's cycle' has everybody at emusic.com going ga-gah over this russian chickie's folk/jazz music...on the Leo label. i dont know exactly why?
we're enchanted or hypmotized by Evelyn Petrova's music. i think she will swing with either avant garde or any music fan on 'years cycle'.......maybe not...tho i am interested in mainstream fan's opinion.
it's kinda like the south park episode where the one of the girls is the first girl to get boobies.. and all the boys fall under some spell....& they begin to meditate --> 'tah-tahs.'
here's the odd write up from emusic editors ... i believe...

Tall, robust and beautiful with an extraordinary voice and virtuoso accordion playing technique, a new star of huge proportions is born. Evelyn Petrova's raw, rootsy, sometimes almost vulgar primitivism blends seamlessly with the free flowing ease of a jazz improviser and the precision of a classical virtuoso. Each of the twelve pieces in Year's Cycle represents one month of the year and is based on the traditional moods of different regions of Russia.

Terrific album! Wildwoman singer (something like David Moss, in vocal intensity and lunacy) and fierce squeezebox player, like a Russian folksinger exploding out of the genre's boundaries. Unique.
(Between Judy Henske, Amy Hanaialii Gilliam, and this gal, I find myself listening to a lot of music by 6-foot+ Amazon-like women!!)

A review of it up on OFN here:

It's a very nice disc but I'm not sure what it's got to do with South Park & tatas....

That is an incredible review, BTW.
Andrea Parkins is a great player. I also like Tony Cedras who was with Muhal and Threadgill and the guy that plays with Braxton/Hollenbeck (Reichmann?).
The guy who plays with Ivo Papasov and Yuri Yunakov is amazing as well.
