Why I Like Pedro Almodóvar

Quoted in today's NY Times:

"I love characters who are crazy in love and will give their life to passion, even if they burn in hell.

"But this is in art...I don not want this to happen in my own life. When my friends start behaving that way, I tell them to stop. They say 'But look at your movies.' I say: That is art. Art has its own world."

Almoldivar is probably my favorite contemporary director, Woman on the Verge, Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down and About My Mother are, IMHO, masterpieces.

The NYT article was fascinating. The pictures were wonderful, especially the one of the actress with the huge honker.

I don't know what Almodovar's influences are but I assume he must have picked up the concept of l'amour fou from his fellow countryman and filmmaker Luis Bunuel.

I don't like Almodovar as much others do. In fact, some films I don't like at all.

Maybe without the lucidity of Bunuel (from wich I've seen only 'Cet obscur object du désir' and 'Un chien andalou')
I liked the old movies of Almodovar (don't ask me the titles, I know only the italian translations....), but since About My Mother I found them more affected. Like the two last Kusturica (but I loved his old movies much more than those of Almodovar, anyway).

The point of my original post was that Almodóvar may make fantasies about passion for a living, but he understands the difference between those fantasies and real life.

I agree with Clint, All About My Mother is a masterpiece. Talk To Her received rave reviews over here but I've not seen it yet.
