Joelle Leandre Project
Joelle Leandre Project
with
Joelle Leandre - bass
Marilyn Crispell - piano
Paul Lovens - drums
Richard Teitelbaum - keyboards, electronics
Carlos Zingaro - violin
recorded 1/16/99 on Leo CD LR 287
Walter - you like this one, right?
this one is growing on me - first few listens a couple of years back didn't connect with me - listening to it now makes me wonder why - just like like Georg Graewe's tremendous 1996 Berlin Concert 1996
Lovens is at his gritty best, alwsys seeming to explode on the kit in unexpected ways - his playing never gets old - although his style and voice has been established for many years - he is a master of space - playing only when he has something to say - besides Crispell, he might be the most orthodox musician in the band. This is another recording that defies being placed into a genre or even a sub-genre - it might not even be a jazz record, I don't really know - one thing I do know, this type of atmosphere brings out the best is lady Marilyn - none of her semi-syrupy playing that imbues some of here ECM trio dates - the unaccompanied two and half minute track 3 (the pieces are simply numbered 1-9 is direct, precise and invigorating.
The band breaks down into solos, duos up to the full quintet - with no formula apparent - yet the recording works well as a cohesive statement
And it is nice concise LP length
an aside - my time off from listening to music and not buying new CD's for quite a while has given me a fresh perspective on quite a bit of music that passed me buy - and this is a good example of that
how many others have heard this?

How many have I had this week (Steve) if you're countin' ?
Seriously, though, I have recently bought this based on rec's by some board members as well as quite an enthusiastic review by Mr. Horn earlier on in Signal to Noise.
By the way it's a good service you're doing here lately, I think, bringing to attention these records for discussion.
edit: I like this one.

I haven't heard this joint in a long time. I'll have to do so next time I'm back.

I remember we talked about it way back and I remember being confounded that you didn't like it.

I love this cd! One of the best "Walter Horn recommendations" I have heard.
Leandre and Crispell are also very good on the Quartet Noir cd.

I haven't listened to this or Quartet Noir for a while. But I definitely like both a great deal; driving to Iowa next week, guess I'll have to pack 'em. I haven't been as jacked about a bass player since Fred Hopkins.

I first heard it on January 16, 1999.
Steve, you should have been there. The opening act was Joe Maneri.
I wrote a review of it at the time, in which I shot Maneri down in flames and sung the praises of Léandre et al. If I can find it, I'll post it.

I'm loving this whole Reynolds retrospective movement--and I'm relieved that the stuff that people have bought (partly?) on my recs is growing on them. (If only Stone hadn't dumped "La Voyelle" so soon!)
You know, maybe Steve's old "one rec per poster" thread (or whatever it was called) should be brought back. I remember Lois and others thinking it was kind of cliqueish, but I know that I and some others got a couple of now beloved discs that way, so it probably did the musicians and labels some good. Anyhow, we could make it voluntary to enter to give and get a rec. Anybody who puts his/her name in automatically gets a rec from every other volunteer.
To take a couple of examples, I wonder what Alastair, Gokhan, Jaka and Dolan think I might like for Xmas this year.

was it Joe, Mat & Randy Peterson, Tom?
if so, I think I remember the post - something to the effect that what each of them were playing had nothing to do with whet the others were playing

There was a similar thread a while back. It was in the Alley of all places.
(You're talking about the one where each poster makes a single rec for each other poster, right? Not like you come in, you make a single rec in the thread, then you go away, right?)

Right and right. Would the Alley thing be worth dredging up or was it a dreaded "flop thread"?

It had a decent run. I'll see if I can find it, but I'd really prefer one on this side of the board.

i dont remember the uproar, i must have missed that, but i didnt get much out of the thread. my only recommendation was from our own simon wiesenthal, gordo, who recommended some greatest yiddish hits...which was to rub faux pas i made earlier. the faux pas was where i typed something like enuf already to zorn et al yiddish excursions, which i described as 'jew' music. thus that's enuf here to brand one as anti-sematic.

That sounds like an interesting thread concept. It would be good to encourage those who tend toward lurking, like myself, to post a concise general description of their tastes for others to react to with the single recommendations.

It would be even a great thread concept for those who have been posting here alredy. But maybe they prefer lists.
I would *love* to read Reynold's brief and concise description of his taste. Or any other preacher's of course.
