Phil Kelly and the NW Prevailing Winds - Convergence Zone

Just picked this up.

Phil: this is really good (not that expected any less). It really swings hard too.

My exposure to contemporary big bands is limitted, but this one's got a lot of power, has great soloists and good composition and arrainging.

Actually, I still need to listen to the last two cuts, but so far: wow!!!

Good going, GP.

Couldn't agree more - if you want to buy the CD directly from Phil with a portion of the proceeds going to the James Williams Scholarship at William Paterson University - please visit Phil's site

As an informal student, protege and coillaborator of Mr. Kelly's, I'm more than happy to say a few words about his album:

If you love mainsteam big band jazz, get "Convergence Zone". The ensemble work is world-class, the solo work is excellent (from Pete Christlieb even beyond that!!). Everything swings from start to finish.

And the charts are the work of a master composer/arranger/orchestrator who's been an inspiration to me and God-only-knows how many other musicians for four decades (sorry 'bout that Phil, it really HAS been that long; where the f--- did the time go??).

Love ya madly!

Phill Kelly's CONVERGENCE ZONE

I don't often do record reviews, but this CD is far and away one of the freshest and most exciting Big Band albums I have heard in recent years: PHIL KELLY AND THE NW PREVAILING WINDS.

I mean to tell you....if you haven't picked up a copy, you need to and soon.

This CD just plain swings from top to bottom. The solos are magnificent and the charts are so expertly arranged, you'd swear you were back in Big Band's hey-day.

On a different level, as a Jazz CD, it is better than best. No kidding.

I don't often rave about the albums I've heard, but this one is a must for anyone who claims to be a Jazz afficianado.

Phil Kelly and the NW Prevailing Winds...few are better.
