Dennis Gonzalez - Catechism

Dennis: this is wonderful. What a band?

Gonzales, Rob Blakeslee - Trumpet
Elton Dean - Sax
Kieth Tippett - Piano
Marcello Mattos - Bass
Louis Moholo - Drums

I really like the "Hymn for John Carter".

The embarrassing fact is, however, that this is my first exposure to Dennis' music, other than the Charles Brackeen stuff he produced. I never managed to get a hold of the stuff he put out on Silkheart in the 80s and 90s. I think I'm on my way to fixing this problem.

Dennis hasn't released any records that aren't excellent, to my knowledge, and I have a pile of them, now.

This was my first DG disk as well, and I don't have any insightful comments other than to say, it's a really lovely record, and I've enjoyed it greatly.

As Gary said, Dennis doesn't make any records that are less than excellent!

But Catechism is particularly noteworthy, with very strong compositions, some brilliant playing by the horns, and

**the GREAT Keith Tippett on piano.**

I suppose this is my favorite of the half-dozen or so albums I have with Dennis as leader, although there are days when the VERY different "Welcome To Us" would be my choice.

I attempted to say something about my rediscovery of Catechism on June 29th, post #943.

Dennis conjured heavy spirits & the brew remains very potent. My favorite Silkheart, to date.

My favorite Dennis Gonzales.

But I like also his early Silkheart records.
For a long time it's was the only Dennis Gonzales that I have known.

"The Nile River Suite", so far, could be a close second.

Dennis Gonzalez's Inspiration Band.
I really like the name than DG gives to his many groups/combination.
This one not only suit very well the record but it gives you a previous taste of what you're going to hear and/or put you in the mood to listen to.
And that's great.

The Music Of Dennis Gonzales

I like much Dennis. Its music is very intelligent and really Jazz
because it leaves a great place with the improvisation...

Thanks, Jesse. Stupid message board tricks!

Just FYI, one can find the URL (address) of a specific post by right-clicking on the post number in the top right corner of the post, then clicking on Properties. But I didn't know that until Moné answered someone's question about how it was done.

(Then to do the rest, one uses the coding feature indicated by on the Post Reply form. Details on request.)

I never got to play it for him...he was too sick to hear it when Henry Franklin took me to meet him in LA. John Carter was a great human being.

Doesn't he though! He told me he was listening non-stop to Alice Coltrane right before the sessions...he tears it up.

Among many other moments, I particularly like the big arpeggio on "Catechism" (the composition). And I can't help but smile at the chords Tippett ends the song on.

Did I send that to you? I doubt seriously that Erik got that far.

Erik has retreated the farthest away that I've ever experienced. He's somewhere else entirely.

I'll probably send the live CD-R from Yells At Eels in Portland, Maine, with Lund and Laplante to JazzLoft, where people can download it.

Mone, do you think it's releaseable?

I'm curious as well - I was pretty close to Erik before I lost my job - I used tospeak to him on the phone quite a bit and I have had no contact with him in over a year.

Then we made plans to tour with Joe McPhee and Erik Lund, and it all just fell apart and we didn't hear from Erik after that but once every 8 months or so. I don't know what's up with him. He'll post her once in a blue moon promising to get back on, and then he disappears again. He owes a shitload of people his Lund / McPhee duo recording, which I hear is really good.

I worry about him. But he is the Jazz AntiChrist of Portland, Maine!
