Mosiac - Don Pullen

Scheduled to be released at the end of October are the 13th and 14th edition of our Mosaic Select series. Mosaic Select features some of the finest jazz at an exceptional value of only $39 for 3 CDs.

Mosaic Select: Don Pullen (MS-013)
Pianist Don Pullen played with everyone from Nina Simone to Milford Graves and had the breadth of range to prove it. The Pullen-Adams Quartet evolved out of Charles Mingusā band and proved to be one of the most inventive and exciting groups of the '80s with extraordinary empathy among its members. Two releases, Breakthrough and Song Everlasting, are included in this set.

After their breakup, Pullen recorded two outstanding trio records for Blue Note that put his rhythmic, dynamic and idiosyncratic style in bold relief. New Beginnings has Gary Peacock on bass and the incomparable Tony Williams on drums and Random Thoughts has James Genus on bass and Lewis Nash on drums.

All four albums are included in their entirety on this 3 disc set.

Mosaic Select: Dexter Gordon (MS-014)
"Thanks to Todd Barkan and these Keystone Korner rare tapes, we have another inspiring visit with Dexter and one of his most creative Quartets. This is the period I first heard him in New York as well as at the Keystone in San Francisco. I was with Woody Herman's band at the time and since I grew up listening to Dexter on records, the impact of being in a room with him and his amazing sound and presence was incredible!!!

You could follow his every line melodically and to watch him visually was a trip. His eyebrows would move up and down as he moved around his horn. He meant every note and every phrase and projected the joy and love in his music from tune to tune.

These live sets are some of the most inspired moments I've heard from Dexter. The relaxed setting at the Keystone and playing for the people is what he lived for and you can feel it loud and clear. Digging Dexter through the years has enriched my life and given me the confidence to be myself, as he was. Dexter lives!" -Joe Lovano, liner notes.

These 3 CDs feature performances taken from seven different dates in 1978 and 1979.

RUNNING LOW/LAST CHANCE

We have just added the The Complete Capitol Recordings of Gene Krupa & Harry James (MD7-192) to our Running Low category.

"An examination of the Krupa contributions shows a disciplined, hard-swinging band built around the leader's dynamic drumming, Charlie Ventura's muscular tenor sax, Red Rodney's brilliant trumpet, unsung alto saxist Charlie Kennedy and ear-popping charts by Ed Finckel, Gerry Mulligan and others. The quality of the selections leaves little to be desired in that the program is sprinkled with such established Krupa standards as "Leave Us Leap," "Boogie Blues," and "Hop, Skip and Jump," the latter two sung in Anita O''Day fashion by Carolyn Grey." - Cam Miller, The Union

"The 64 tracks heard here from the 1955-58 period reveal Harry James more happily reconciled with his jazz roots. After opening with a retrospective of earlier landmark commercial hits, the program quickly changes into a display of predominantly hip performances. These are marked by the Basie-oriented originals of Neal Hefti, Ernie Wilkins and others, which features copious jazz solos by James, altoman Willie Smith (of Lunceford and Ellington fame), tenor saxophonists Corky Corcoran and his replacement, Sam Firmature, and trombonists Juan Tizol, Dick Nash and Ray Sims. The ideal drummer for this cooking edition of the James band, Buddy Rich, makes his presence felt throughout the May 1957 sessions, while the booting Jackie Mills takes over on the 1958 dates." - Jack Sohmer Jazz Times

I"ve got all four Pullen albums. I strongly urge anybody who doesn't own them to buy this set. "Breatkthrough" is the best Adams-Pullen quartet record, IMO, and the two trio records are terrific.

That's another good one. Also City Gates and Decisions. There are also some great boots of that quartet. I used to see them at the Vanguard about four times per year.

I have the Pullens already, too, but echo the rec for those who don't. I'm glad that at least Mosaic is trying to keep some of that man's music available for people who missed it. It's a shame how his records have been allowed to disappear. A real shame. One of the best jazz has ever produced. The Adams-Pullen band as well.

"Breakthrough" is my favorite of these titles, as well.

There are no extra tracks on these?

I have all the original releases but am tempted to get this anyway.
