Pianist/composer Michele Rosewoman and Quintessence perform new music, including "Advance Dance," which was created with generous support from Chamber Music America's New Works Creation and Presentation Program, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Performing throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe since 1986 and with four highly acclaimed recordings on Enja Records, the current Quintessence line-up includes Mark Shim/tenor saxophone, Miguel Zenon/alto and soprano saxophones, Lonnie Plaxico/bass and Gerald Cleaver/drums. The ensemble reflects Ms. Rosewoman's deep roots in traditional, contemporary and avant-garde jazz idioms, sacred Cuban folkloric music, as well as r&b and funk - and showcases her distinct ensemble concept and forward-looking compositional approach.
Although New Yor-Uba is acknowledged as Ms. Rosewoman's main vehicle for presenting a total and literal synthesis of Cuban folkloric music and contemporary jazz, her performances are always joyfully and profoundly steeped in Latin rhythms and traditions, fitting neatly into Joe’s Pub’s evening of Cuban culture.
