Frank Kimbrough: Lullabluebye

Frank Kimbrough, piano
Ben Allison, bass
Matt Wilson, drums

I read a glowing review somewhere (Washington Post, jazz mag?) and decided to pick this up.

I'm glad I did. This comes highly recommended. There are recordings that I have an immediate connection with and there are those that require repeated listenings. This CD covers both instances (I'm listening to it here at work as I type), music for the head and the heart in my case. Loved the title cut, there's a few Andrew Hill moments (to my ears) that I perked up to.

But being a huge James Bond fan my favorite cut is John Barry's "You Only Live Twice". I hadn't read the playlist before putting the disc in the player last night, so when this tune came up I just started laughing out loud. I love that song.

Anyway, this is the first time I've heard this trio although I've got CDs with Kimbrough on it, most notably the Herbie Nichols Project, so I'm eager to check out their other recordings.

This is a lovely recording.

If you don't mind subbing Jeff Ballard (a personal fave) for Matt Wilson, check out last year's Quickening. It's another fine, fine outing by a Kimbrough-led trio.

Lullabluebye is near the top of my to-buy list, although I've sadly put purchases on hold again for a bit.
