Scandal in the European Parliament
The Italian Christian right wing candidate Rocco Buttiglione has not been elected to European comissioner (as would have been normal according to turnus, in my understanding) because he has sed that according to his believes homosexuality is a sin. Italian minister for Italians in the world, a member of the present Italian right wing government has commented as follows "Unfortunately Buttiliogni lost. Poor Europe, the faggots are in the majority" I am not really sure how bad a slur "culattoni" is but etymologically it sounds pretty bad.

FOREIGN DESK! – UPDATE…From: Over Here…RC.
BBC EUROPE 14 October 2004
Controversial EU nominee wavers
Italy's controversial nominee for EU justice commissioner has hinted that he might "renounce" his new job.
On Monday, a panel of MEPs decided that Rocco Buttiglione, a devout Catholic who regards homosexuality as a sin, was unsuitable for the justice post.
"I have enough faith to renounce a job in the Commission if need be," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. "Now the question is entirely out of my hands, it is in the hands of the European Parliament," he said.
European Parliament leaders have failed to agree on the fate of Mr Buttiglione, who also holds conservative views on marriage.
Parliament President Josep Borrell said it would simply forward its views to the incoming Commission President, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso. Mr Durao Barroso said on Tuesday he had full faith in his new team of 24 commissioners, including Mr Buttiglione.
EU law does not allow the European Parliament to accept or reject individual members of the commission - it can only veto an entire team.
Key talks
Mr Durao Barroso is next scheduled to meet parliament leaders on 21 October. The parliament will vote on 27 October to decide whether to accept the new commission.
"There is no doubt, I think, it is better for the European Parliament and for Europe to have a man of conscience, but if I should be discriminated (against) because I am a Catholic, I prefer to remain a Catholic," Mr Buttiglione told the BBC.
Mr Buttiglione was pressed on whether his views were offensive to many people in the modern world. He said: "I think that many people are sinners, including myself, and I don't think them to be worse sinners than myself. It is a theological issue, and it should not interfere with our policies."
Mr Buttiglione, who is close to the Vatican and a member of the Christian Democrat UDC party, said during a confirmation hearing in Brussels that he considered homosexuality "a sin".
He went on to say the aim of marriage was "to allow women to have children and to have the protection of a male".

If this guy applied for citizenship, he sounds like the perfect republican candidate for the next president election. (Bush will have to resign after next period anyway)

Yardbird, I was thinking the very same thing - but didn't want to provoke a pre-emptive strike by this board's "Dubya Faction" on ...Scandinavia.
Hey, all we've got are a few Viking Longboats...and Killer Herring WMDs...

I think we've got the right to provoke, as we discovered that continent (Leif Erikson).
If it had'nt been for Europeans, the descendants of Geronimo and Sitting Bull would run for president.
Probably been preferable.

Whereas...in America!
Orgies are the way to ease social tensions, claims US judge
Oliver Burkeman in New York
Friday October 1, 2004
The Guardian [UK]
He is the conservative bastion of the US supreme court, a favourite of President Bush, and a hunting partner of the vice-president. He has argued vociferously against abortion rights, and in favour of anti-sodomy laws.
But it turns out that there is another side to Justice Antonin Scalia: he thinks Americans ought to be having more orgies.
Challenged about his views on sexual morality, Justice Scalia surprised his audience at Harvard University, telling them: "I even take the position that sexual orgies eliminate social tensions and ought to be encouraged."
It seems unlikely that this is what President Bush meant when he promised to appoint more judges like Scalia to the court, should the opportunity arise. Crucially, Justice Scalia is one of the judges in favour of overturning Roe v Wade, the landmark judgment protecting abortion as a constitutional right.
One audience member also asked the judge "whether you have any gay friends, and, if not, whether you'd like to be my friend," the Harvard Crimson newspaper reported.
"I probably do have some gay friends, but I have never pressed the point," Justice Scalia responded. He offered no clue to the logic behind his claim that orgies eliminate social tensions.
Nobody asked him whether he was familiar with Rick Moody's novel The Ice Storm, turned into a movie by Ang Lee, which appeared to suggest the exact opposite.

What I wonder is how Rocco Buttiglione differentiates between being annoyed by EU bureaucrats because they are flamingly gay and being cheesed off by them because they are acting European. I mean how do you tell?

Passive, not pacifist and as opposed to active. Ie. one who gets sodomised rather than does the sodomising.
