SF Area: David Sanchez Workshop

Tenor Saxophonist David Sanchez visits the Jazzschool in Berkeley this Saturday!

From Rhythm to Sound

An approach to learning that focuses on using various rhythms to inspire and achieve a personal sound. This method shows how rhythm can alter melody, harmony, and even the sound of your own instrument. The goal: to fashion a unique musical concept and sound. Open to all levels; please bring your instruments.

Saturday, October 16, 4:30-6:30pm
David Sánchez
$20

Renowned tenor saxophonist David Sánchez, a native of Puerto Rico, has been a leading figure in Latin jazz since joining Dizzy Gillespies's United Nations Orchestra in 1991. SF Bay Area: Berkeley Jazz Workshops

The Berkeley Jazz Workshop "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Halloween" Concert (aka the "Is This an Election Year or Did I Forget To Take My Meds" concert): 2924 Ashby, 2:00 - 5:00 in the afternoon on Sunday October 17th, free to the public, and anybody else who wants to come. That's in the Elmwood, in Berkeley, just above College Ave. Cake and coffee provided for a modest donation. See student ensembles play music by Herbie Hancock, other famous people & people in the ensembles who are not famous at all but wish they were so they could quit their day job and do this full-time.

The Berkeley Jazz Workshops are ensembles that meet once a week, in the evenings, to provide experience playing with a full rhythm section. There are groups at various levels, beginning to advanced, and players on all instruments are welcome. The material ranges from standards (thirties & forties repetoire) to bebop, brazilian, afro-cuban, and modern jazz pieces. The jazz workshops are a place to get some experience, to meet other stir-crazy musicians, and to make all the mistakes you want. Fees are reasonable, covering rent on the space, and some low-key but very useful coaching. We have some openings for soloists (trumpet, violin, sax, etc.), but there are some spots in more advanced groups for piano, drums, bass, etc. It's always worth checking in. To get more info, or to stop by & listen, call 510-444-6232, e-mail janusz@famousbrandmusic.com, or visit, online: berkeleyjazz.com

Or stop in on Sunday. Whole range of groups: some new to this game, perhaps a little wobbly, some experienced & pretty damn good. A good time to had by all. Yarg.
