Speak No Evil and Juju are such incredible albums. I have a hard time choosing one song because the albums as a whole are strong cohesive statements. But the stuff he wrote for his own outfits tend to be my favorite.

Hm, this thread died a quick death but I'm nonetheless surprised that "Lester Left Town" never turned up...!

Recently sent away for the new Eddie Henderson (Time & Spaces) and it's a scorcher - with three Shorter compositions. Water Babies, Masqualero and Angola.

They sound as fresh as ever and Henderson is really hot. Dave Kikoski's playing is awsome too.

Wayne has to be one of the most recorded writers of the modern era.

Isn't there a ballad on one of Wayne's Bluenote albums...."Lady Day"?

I've got it on tape but forget the album. Stunning.

Yes it's on The Soothsayer. A great album but it's cursed with a faulty (distorted) recording, though it only affects the loud tracks, not the ballads.

What about "Sanctuary"? Not sure if Wayne ever cut it under his own name, but there are at least two versions by Miles--one of them the great closing track of "Bitches Brew."

I'm willing to put Footprints in my top 5 jazz compositions of all time. I think it's just an incredible achievement.

You know, what I think is so amazing about the tune is that lots of people have done interesting things with it and there's just no way to f*ck it up.

Good choices m'man! But, nothing from the Weather Report days, or indeed from his tenure with Blakey?

Thanks you have great choices also. I failed to include your choice Witch hunt, great swirling intro then it becomes a cool tune with a steady tempo.

Sorry I was still under the impression of blue note recordings for a seperate thread

Anyhow, most of my favorite tunes for weather report are credited to Joe Zawinul. But there should be contributions of Shorter on some.

With Weather report:
The Moors
Mysterious Traveller
Surucucu
Sightseeing

With the jazz Messengers:
Ping-pong

With Miles Davis:
Prince of Darkness
E.S.P.
Limbo
Nefertiti
Orbits
Footprints
