Anthony Braxton reissues

The Emarcy label has announced the CD re-release of two Anthony Braxton LPs from 1972 (street date for Germany: December 7, 2004):

Donna Lee and Saxophone Improvisations Series F.

Other Emarcy reissues include recordings by Paul Bley (Improvisie), the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Dave Burrell, Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd and more. I think all of those recordings were previously released on the America label.

Another Braxton recording from the 1970s finally is out on Leo (first release): Solo (Milano) 1979 Vol.2.

I have both those albums on vinyl and they both should be re-issued. But when the hell are they going to re-issue many of the 70's period albums like "New York Fall 1974" or "Five Pieces 1975" and some of the other Arista albums.

They have not re-issued those yet have they?

I think the Series F improvisations came out in two issues. I have the one on Inner City and I think I remember that the other (on a Japanese label?)includes more tracks (shrugs might know for sure).

In any case, it's a great album, imho, second only to 'For Alto' in his solo oeuvre.

wasn't Series F on Inner City was one lp? The America issue was 2 lp's. My copy is the original French. Some killer solo Brax for sure.

Donna Lee is for completists only.

Donna Lee is a very interesting album not necessarily because of the content alone, but the period in which he released it.

The estimated price of Saxophone Improvisations Series F suggests that it will be two CDs.

Can you recommend a good source on the net from which these might be ordered, Martin? The Braxton titles are of interest, the Art Ensemble releases on the America label far more so.

I'm sure Dusty Groove will have them at good prices once they're actually out.

Yeah, the Inner City was a single record. Don't think I've ever actually heard the America issue, which annoys me.....

You may be correct about 'Donna Lee' but, iirc, the title track was one of the earliest things I ever heard by AB (on radio) and it knocked me out back then (probably late '72, early '73?), so I have a soft spot for it.

I seem to remember it's the band that's lacking, not Brax. It will be good clean fun either way.......

Glad to hear this. My copy of Series F (double on America) is a pretty hacked up garage sale find so needs replaced. Dona Lee, I like it at least as much as the other standards sets up until the newest one, but doubt I'' bother replacing. One album I'd like to see reissues is the Four Comps on Denon with the Japanese band. Killer record and getting tough to find.

As for this series, isn't there a Mingus record on America that hasn't seen CD issue? I seem to remember a 3 lp live set...if so, love to see that again.

And what are the AEoC records that are coming out?

ok i went & checked it out and then i learned wow totally different recording...i always thought dona lee was a renaming and reissute of the in the tradition disc. i never checked b4 ... i apologize for that and realize m-44 what i now must do. i will be turning in my braxton credentials in the morning and no longer may remain a 'master braxton' fan.

i dont feel so sorry for myself, as i do for you guyz. i (840) m-44 realize how u must feels as both guyz and galz (bluenoter & franki). i let you down. so i apologize to you, each and everyone, from the top of my head to the bottom of my toes....

branded...

A list of America releases is here:

America

Looking at this list has always intrigued me. For instance, what is the Albert Ayler record called Free Jazz that was originally released on Fantasy? I have the Art Ensemble of Chicago's Phase One in it's original Prestige release. The side (2) long piece entitled Lebert Aaly (dedicated to Albert Ayler) is notorious for being the source for the Aaly Trio's name. I believe With Fontella Bass and Certain Blacks has been released elsewhere but I am drawing a blank right now. I also have Mal Waldron with the Steve Lacy Quintet and hopefully that great record will be released as well.

"Certain Blacks" was released (vinyl) on Inner City.

I've said it before, but AEC fans who've not heard the first side of 'Phase One' are in for an incredible treat...

I think it was actually Mingus at Monterey that I was wondering about. Has it been CDed yet? I assme most Mingus has.

What's so special about Phase One, and is it slated for reissue? I have Certain Blacks and with F. Bass

Here is a list of Emarcy CDs to be released in early December. I can't comment on the reliability of release date/items. The list is taken from the online catalogue of one of Germany's biggest CD stores, where all of these CDs may be preordered right now. In Germany, Emarcy has the same distributor as ECM and Verve, so the CDs are likely to be widely available (at least in Europe), once they are out. Don't know anything about the distribution situation in the US, but I would be puzzled if there should be any problems with recordings by all-American artists originally released on a label called America:

Frank Wright - Uhura Na Umoja
Mal Waldron With The Steve Lacy Quintet
Clifford Thornton - The Panther And The Lash
Alan Shorter - Tes Esat
Archie Shepp - Black Gipsy
Roswell Rudd
Steve Lacy - The Gap
Emergency - Homage To Peace
Dave Burrell - After Love
Anthony Braxton - Saxophone Improvisations Series F
Anthony Braxton - Donna Lee
Paul Bley - Improvisie
Art Ensemble Of Chicago - With Fontella Bass
Art Ensemble Of Chicago - Phase One
Art Ensemble Of Chicago - Certain Blacks

On a related note: Is the Art Ensemble's Live At Mandel Hall worth listening/buying? This one was re-issued on a single Delmark CD and chronologically was the successor of Phase One.

For my bucks, 'Ohnedaruth' (Side One on the LP) is an absollutely perfect encapsulation of everything AACM. Begins with an extended percussion section (mostly gongs, supplemented by some electric bass by Favors), sgues into a brief Favors acoustic solo, launches into that roaring theme (one of my faves from the AEC--also love the perfomance of it on 'Bap-Tizum') and concludes with three outrageous solos by Jarman, Bowie and Mitchell, the last of which is possibly the single most incendiary thing I've ever heard from him, building to an awesome, wrenching climax. (Whew! excuse me while I clean myself off).

Side two ain't bad either. Probably my most enjoyed AEC album after 'Sophie' and 'People in Sorrow', though Ohnedaruth may be my favorite individual piece.
