C.A.M. Jazz (!)

We got a package at the station the other day from Sunnyside, a label I think very highly of, and which I suspect a lot of us are familliar with (Luciana Souza, Kenny Werner, Jerry Gonzalez etc etc etc). Sunnyside even dazzled me recently by reissuing one of the better releases by Daniel Mille, who I'm daft about but who's stuff was really difficult to find in North America until Sunnyside started recording him and reissuing his work. But I digress...

The package contained two new releases by a label which Sunnyside seems to have picked up recently. The label's called C.A.M. Jazz.

C.A.M. Jazz is an Italian label, a division of a company which releases film music called C.A.M. Original Soundtracks. They've released a few very nice historical recordings and perhaps a couple of dozen extremely beautiful jazz recordings featuring people like Enrico Pierranunzi, Roberto Gatto, Charlie Haden, Stefano Bollani, Enrico Rava and the like. Several of thier recordings focus on new Jazz interpretations of Italian film music be composers like Rugantino, Morricone and Fellini.

Since this label seems on the verge of much wider distribution in the US, and since it seems we'll be hearing more of thier releases played on stateside radio, I wanted to share the good news.

I've been meaning to talk about this label. In the past few months I've bought Enrico Pieranunzi's "Fellini Jazz" and Giovanni Tomasso's "Secondo Tempo" (the latter when apparently the exchange rate wasn't to good). Both are wonderful and feature performers like Joe Lovano, Teri Lyne Carrington, Kenny Wheeler, Chris Potter, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian.

The Italians have a certain flair about their movie music and they sound great in a jazz context.
