Read the last paragraph.

Where are you now, Lee Harvey Oswald

I'd rather advocate the democratic option to get rid of the pest.

Sisco beat you to this story in his Tell It Like ... It Is thread.

Your thread title may be much more apt, though.

Poor Charlie Brooker, driven to despair by the thought of four more years of George W. Bush.

a) Brooker is a Brit, and cannot vote, and clearly feels powerless to do anything about his predicament. Hence the despairing call for an assassin.

b) He oughta take a few deep cleansing breaths, because I predict only two possible outcomes to the upcoming election: 1) Kerry wins comfortably. 2) Bush wins via fraud. Either way, Kerry ends up in the White House. I am, for the moment, discounting the possibility of civil war.

Gordon -- He's hardly alone. And Americans have been wearing those same comments as buttons and bumperstickers since at least 1980. During Raygun daze, I wore one that said "Shoot Bush First." I've seen buttons reading "Where Is Lee Harvey Oswald When His Country Really Needs Him" for sale all over the country for many years.

Brooker writes a "humorous" TV preview column. I wouldn't take it seriously. It's not in the op-ed pages, it's next to "this week's films on TV".

See, that's why reading hard-copy papers is a good thing.

Removing the Bushster would be a boon to international (and domestic) mental health.

oh please, does this country need anything else to go into panic-mode with? If Bush was killed, he would be a martyr for all those christian freaks out there waiting for the last days. That's ALL we need.

Besides as the truth about his presidency starts leaking out more I want him around to take responsibility. A dead man can't take responsibility.

Not to mention it would hand the presidency to Dickwad. That alone is the best security Bush could ever have.

What? Dick ISN'T president? That is news to me. I mean, Bush can't really be THAT important in that office can he?

I just clicked on my own link, which contained the entire column at the time I posted it, and got the following:

Screen Burn, The Guide

Sunday October 24, 2004
The Guardian

The final sentence of a column in The Guide on Saturday caused offence to some readers. The Guardian associates itself with the following statement from the writer.

"Charlie Brooker apologises for any offence caused by his comments relating to President Bush in his TV column, Screen Burn. The views expressed in this column are not those of the Guardian. Although flippant and tasteless, his closing comments were intended as an ironic joke, not as a call to action - an intention he believed regular readers of his humorous column would understand. He deplores violence of any kind."

Absolutely. IMO, as the head-honcho of the neo-cons, pulling Bush's strings, Dick Cheney is the most dangerous man in the White House.
AND, if Bush is given his second term, that doesn't limit Cheney to four more years as vice President. He actually could go on for TWELVE more years, if the Republicans get elected in 2008 and he is kept on by whoever takes over from George W Bush.
When, in anyone's memory, has a vice-President had more power than the President does, to influence and to set policy??
Hiding Cheney and not Bush, in an "undisclosed location" whenever there was a threat, seemed strange to me.......................until now.

Actually, they've since admitted that they hid Bush as well. The propaganda at the time was just that.

Not to worry, Pat. With his lifestyle and eating habits, he won't live long enough for your scenario -- and I'll piss on his grave one day.

Not a good idea, then we'd have Cheney.

Gary and Clint, I agree with both of you.
I'm reminded of some wag, during the first Bush administration who said that if George H.W. Bush were assassinated, their first assignment would be to kill Dan Quayle. Of course, that was a reference to Quayle's apparent "bridesmaid" status, with no real power.
However, in this case, with George W. gone, you would be subjected to the dominion of Dick Cheney, who some say is the President by proxy. He would have NO constraints on him at all, although it's difficult to see that he does now.

Can't argue with that!! I can't remember one thing about him, beyond some people comparing him, looks-wise, to Robert Redford.

Those were obviously the same people who compare me to Tom Cruise.

The very ones!!!!
If you can spell "potato" though, nobody will compare you to Dan Quayle.
On the other hand, put on a hat and we'd all be hard-pressed to distinguish you from Tom Cruise. It's the cross you bear.

I think once a President is elected he/she (?) should be instantly excuted for inevitable future crimes. Who needs Lee Harvey?

On second thought, that close-setness and beadiness of the eyes will require constant wearing of stylish sunglasses.
