East vs. West vs. Euro vs. Etc. Sound

Historically there have often been "regional" nuances of Jazz; i.e. East/West Coast sound of the 50's/60's. I'm wondering to what extent regional nuances exist today. Is there still a marked difference in the East/West coast sound in the States and what are the global differences/nuances? (I don't think I worded this very well, but I think you know what I mean -- Who's diggin' what where and why?! )
