Thursday, November 2004, marks the second anniversary of the Black Workers Pub (BWP). For two years, the Black Telephone Workers for Justice have overcome incredible odds and presented world class jazz programs at affordable prices to the Newark area community. It is only fitting that the anniversary program showcases one of the most anticipated programs ever sponsored by the BWP: “One for Trane,” featuring an all-star line-up of jazz giants, John Hicks on piano, Rashied Ali on drums, Reggie Workman on bass, Odean Pope and Sonny Fortune on saxophones.
Thursday, November 4, 2004 will feature and extraordinary night of John Coltrane’s music. All of the above musicians are highly capable of rising to the task, as Odean, Reggie, and Rashied were members of Coltrane’s bands. Sonny and John absorbed Coltrane’s influences and have played in many configurations with musicians that played in Coltrane’s bands. These “GIANTS” of jazz are well known to jazz lovers. There is not enough space to outline the musical biographies of all the participating musicians as we usually do. We suggest that interested persons go on-line and search for the bios of the musicians.
“One for Trane” promises to be one of the greatest nights of live jazz in the Newark area. We urge all of our friends and supporters to set aside the date. John Coltrane lives! Everyday we can feel him in our bones.
