Life is Precious and God and the Bible
I've been watching and rewatching season 4 of 'Mr Show' lately. It was definitely the best season of this show, and also it last. It's so funny and innovative (at least for tv standards) and it really sucks more people don't know about it.
'Mr Show with Bob and Dave' was a sketch comedy show that ran on HBO late at nights from 95 to 98. It featured Bob Odenkirk and Dave Cross - both Ben Stiller Show alumns, among other distinctions, and both much better known now than when the show was on. The rest of the cast and writers were all very talented and funny. It was a mixture of live and pre-recorded sketches and the gimmick was that one sketch linked to the next in some way. Because it was on HBO, they could get away with a lot more - not just language, but in subject matter as well. The subject matter and comedy have a wide range, but much of it tends to veer towards the absurd.
Most of my favorite sketches were from season 4. These included (but were not limited to)
Life is precious and God and the Bible,
Superstar - emotion lotion,
Wicked Scepter,
the story of the story of the story of Everest,
the rapping Lama,
blind house/racist in the year 3000
t'aint
Fetus beauty pageant
Like many good comedies, it took a few years for the cast and crew to really perfect the concept of the show. It's really a shame they didn't get a chance to keep going.
Sure, there were some misses but the hits more than made up for it. Most of the misses are concentrated in seasons 1 and 2, anyway. In the audio commentary, the cast is pretty candid about failed sketches.
"I'm a superstar in a superstar machine, taking it to the stars!! Emotion Lotion!"

Lest this thread title causes any misconceptions, that's a line from one of the sketches (said by a talk show audience member)

It was all I could muster to open this thread, Sergio. I'm glad it turned out the way it did.
I can't believe it's been six years since Mr. Show was on TV. I loved that show!

What a fucked up thing to write. Take a dump in one of your own frigging threads. If you don't care about this or that, keep it to yourself.
Anyway...I'm looking forward to seeing this for the first time. I have it in my queue at Netflix. I'm a big fan of Cross, mostly due to Arrested Development.

I also have Mr. Show queued up at Netflix, having never seen a single episode.

Mr. Show was mostly pretty brilliant, also being responsible for launching Tenacious D. and thus creating Jack Black's career. I disagree with Sergio about the fourth season being the strongest, though, it's a little too self-indulgent for me. that taint sketch is hilarious, though, I haven't made it to that on the DVD yet...

The difference between you and me is that I'm not particularly concerned about the response to that question.

Season 3 was quite excellent as well. I think 3 had the HSN (Hail Satan Network), and the show with the recovered homosexual.

yeah, Hail Satan is a much-quoted one around here ("I eat, I sleep, I watch pornography"), awesome.

When someone I know says they're an idiot savant (in jest, of course), I'll reply, "You're half right!"
