"Betty Carter Birthday Tribute" at The Lenox Lounge, May 16th & 17th, 2003
In Celebration of jazz legend, Betty "Bebop" Carter's birthday, former Carter sidemen, Danny Mixon and Lisle Atkinson, team up with drummer, Michael Carvin and jazz vocalist, Rochelle Thompson to deliver yet another electrifying tribute! On May 16th & 17, The Lenox Lounge will bring you a stimulating evening of jazz with all of the energy & originality that became synonymous with Ms. Betty Carter and those she took under her wing.
Mixon and Atkinson's musicianship and accolades speak for themselves, not only due to their association with Betty Carter, but their own achievements as well. The newer member of this "tribute" group is Drummer, Thabo Michael Carvin, who has played/recorded with such notables as: Oliver Lake, Don Pullen, Dewey Redman, Dave Holland and many others.
"I’m ecstatic about this," Ms. Thompson says. "This is the fourth time we’ve presented it and the response has been overwhelming. The venues have been packed! Ms. Carter helped a whole lot of musicians, She should be remembered and celebrated! Mr. Mixon let me do my own arrangements of her material; so, it really is a different take on things. The Trio is the best, and we really come out swinging. But we can be quiet and tender, too!"
The real challenge goes to the vocalist. Rochelle Thompson, a true innovator as a jazz vocalist, is full of daring, confidence and totally dedicated to her calling. She completely rises to the occasion with confidence and panache on such Carter originals as: Sounds (Movin' On), Tight and Open the Door. The result is a stimulating and original performance that seems to gradually be turning into a traveling tribute...as well it should! Due to popular demand, three previous performances were held at: Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church/ Victory Arts Project concert, the Lenox Lounge last year and The Stamford Center of the Arts - Rich Forum, this past February, 2003.
