I thought I'd mention my eighth jazz book which is being published soon by Backbeat Books. Jazz On Film fills a gap that has not been occupied since the early 1980s book Jazz In The Movies.
It features short reviews and ratings of every DVD, video, Hollywood film, documentary and film short that I could come across that has an appearance (even very brief ones) by a jazz musician or singer. Since I completed it in early 2004, there will undoubtedly be newer things that I missed, and probably obscure videos that I didn't run across. But mostly everything is covered up to a year ago, including The Terminal and It's DeLovely. The emphasis in the reviews is on what jazz takes place onscreen as opposed to the soundtrack. It has a few brief essays about the general history of jazz on films and then review sections on Videos/DVDs, Hollywood Movies, Shorts/Television specials/Documentaries which are not currently available but might be in the future, and Miscellaneous items.
I think people that are interested in jazz and jazz films will find it to be fun and informative. It'll be available through
www.amazon.com, directly from Backbeat and in most bookstores soon.
So much for my free ad! Feel free to fill up this thread with comments, opinions, arguments and a list of the things that I missed.
