ABOUT THE ALTERNATIVE TROMBONE SUMMIT
The Alternative Trombone Summit was organized with the goal of providing trombone players with a glimpse of the new, contemporary avenues of trombone playing—from jazz and classical to experimental—and to recognize the expanding role of players in these fields.
Cost for the entire weekend: $45

SAM BURTIS SEMINAR

Sam Burtis is Trombonist and Transcriber/Arranger with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. Burtis also gives clinics and masterclasses in universities and conservatories both nationally and internationally. This seminar will focus on techniques from Burtis’ book “The American Trombone,” which encompasses techniques
used in jazz, classical and contemporary music.

Named five straight years as best trombonist in the Down Beat Critics Poll, Ray Anderson has led or co-led a daunting assortment of tradition-minded and experimental groups, big bands, blues and folk projects and even a trombone quartet.
Craig Harris has been called "one of the most complete trombonists in music today, and without question one of the finest younger composers". Innovation and artistic
experimentation are his trademarks.
In addition to his band Defunkt, Joseph Bowie has worked with the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra, Don Pullen, the African Brazilian Connection and the Chief Cliff Singers, the Vienna Arts Orchestra, Count Basie and the Sebastian Piekarek Quartet.
This event is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), a state agency.

METRO TROMBONE ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE

This 14-piece trombone ensemble was founded as an outlet for composers interested in the choir format. This performance will feature a wide range of music—from classical and contemporary to jazz arrangements.

DAVID TAYLOR PERFORMANCE; TICKETS $15
David Taylor is one of the most recorded trombonists in history. Winner of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Most Valuable Player Award for five consecutive years, his work spans the classical and jazz genres. He has recorded four albums as a solo artist and has worked with a wide array of artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Daniel Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Quincy Jones and Miles Davis.

This seminar, led by Conservatory Directors Earl McIntyre and Greg Erickson will address new areas where the trombone is being used musically and new ways for players to create new artistic and business opportunities.

Curtis Fowlkes is a trombonist and the co-founder of “Jazz Passengers”. His past credits include tours and recordings with such artists as: Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra, Henry Threadgill, Bobby Previte, The Lounge Lizards, Bill Frisell, Elvis Costello and Don Byron. He has also appeared in the Robert Altman film, “Kansas City” and recorded soundtracks for films such as “Finding Forrester”and “Get Shorty”. In 1999, Curtis recorded his first CD (as a leader) for the Knitting Factory label entitled “Reflect”.
Earl McIntyre, tuba player and trombonist has played with Gil Evans, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Taj Mahal, Lester Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Carla Bley, Lou Rawls, The Count Basie Orchestra, The Ellington Orchestra, The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Slide Hampton, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Chico O’ Farrill and the Mingus Big Band, among others.
Vincent Chancey, French horn player, has a profound connection to contemporary jazz, having toured with the Sun Ra Arkestra for more than five years in the 70's. He has also been a member of the Paul Winter Consort and Carla Bley Band, and is the recipient of a Downbeat Magazine Critic's Poll Award.
Drummer Vinnie Johnson is a jazz and Broadway veteran whose career spans thirty years. A versatile, highly regarded jazz stylist who’s equally at home in a trio or big band, he has worked and recorded with noatables such as Lena Horne, Lester Bowie (Brass Fantasy), Bennie Powell, Chris Conner, LaVerne Baker, and the Basie
Band.
