I'll be at the Evan Parker show on April 22nd (girlfriend permitting), so since I'm only in the country once a year, anyone want to make it a hang? Can't find the original thread to see who's already down to go.

I'll be in NY April 17-21 in case you make it down. Will likely see Parker/Lytton/Guy at Tonic the 20th - I owe you a pint. How long you in the States?

According to My Root Down , Parker's playing at Emmanuel Church, Boston, MA. I'm not interested in this. However, I would be much more up for a hang if it were for Kenny Garrett at Sculler's or, even better, the next night (4/23) at the Regattabar for Gargonz (George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, Bruce Gertz, John Lockwood, Bob Gullotti and Bob Kaufman).

If my wife allows it, I'd be willing to hit both the EP and the Gargonz.

I'm considering it but my luck's been holding pretty steadily on the wrong end for some months now. By the way, it's being said that Guy's not coming and Von S is instead. I'd be more excited about the trio if it was Parker/Guy/Lytton.

Dunno if I'm in NYC - maybe for a couple of days, although I doubt I'll have any choice whether it coincides with the EP show (and although Guy/Schlip/Lytton are never over here, I can see EP anytime I like, not youse guys though :'( ) - will post my whereabouts when I know where I'll be. I'll almost definitely go to the Garzone show, haven't seen him for a while, and not since I've been old enough to buy the bastard a drink. Anyone have Lund's number? (or is he back, I've lost track of what's going on). Needs a slap 'round the earhole that boy.

I assume there's an NY thread for the tour. 20th is within the time when I'm there, will have to see what happens. KcBob, as I remember it I owe you an Indian, in the US for 11 days - mainly a girlfriend visit - although she's moving here in July.

Couldn't find this thread in the Archives. If someone else is able to, I'd appreciate it. But meanwhile, is anyone planning on seeing the incredible Dave Holland Quintet this week at the R-Bar?

I'll be there Thursday night. I've been looking forward to it for a while. In two weeks, the incomparable Eddie Palmieri brings his septet to town. He has Brian Lynch on trumpet and Craig Handy on tenor. Can't miss with those guys. Should be a couple of great shows.

Valerie, I was just realizing the other day that with the new no smoking law that kicked in this week that I can now go to Wally's and not have to worry about smelling like an ashtray when I get home. I may have to plan on visiting there more often.

Later,
Kevin

Kevin: I'll be there Thursday night as well. How can we hook up to say hello? Feel free to email me.

Thanks for the heads-up about Wally's. Looks like I'll pay a visit there soon for the first time in many years!

I would like to take this opportunity to remind one and all that Wally's has not gotten any bigger over the years, and that the ability to "own" personal space has always been more important than the ability to withstand the effect of 80 people exhaling Kools in a small space...

I just got home from seeing Dave Holland's band at The RBar. You'll will all have a great time. It was very nice to see/hear Antonio Hart although he didn't get much solo space in the set I saw. Robin Eubanks was much more prominent. Steve Nelson was very tasty on vibes and marimba and the drummer, not Billy Kilson and whose name I didn't get, was very exciting if a bit overbearing (but then I was sitting only a few seats away from him). Let me know what you all think

What the.... first no Potter and now no Kilson too?? Man, as much as I like this band, Kilson has always been one of the highlights for me. I mean, no disrespect to anyone, and I am actually looking forward to seeing Antonio Hart again, but this isn't "The Dave Holland Quintet" anymore. Well, we shall see, won't we?

Valerie, I expect that as usual, I'll be at table 253, up in front. Rob and I get that table for nearly all shows as we buy them when they go on sale and we request that table. We actually kicked Sue Mingus out of these seats when the big band came into town a couple of visits ago. I'll be wearing a yellow shirt so you can't miss me.

Later,
Kevin

Well, I have to admit that I'm a bit devastated, to say the least!! I've been getting used to seeing the group without Chris but, like Kevin, I just can't imagine the experience without Billy. He has always been much more than one-fifth of the pleasure for me. Damn!! I must admit though that I'm not completely surprised as Billy is so in demand these days!

Kevin, I will definitely look for you. I chuckled when I realized you may have booted both me and Sue out of that table since I have been with her for most of the shows in the past couple of years!

Well, we will see/hear what we will see/hear tonight! I'm sure it will still be wonderful.

Not going, but I caught the Quintet last time they were here and it was memorable. As for the personnel changes, all things must pass and the definitive DHQ more than made its mark during what in retrospect was a pretty long run by today's standards. That doesn't mean, of course, that the thrill is gone. How about a little faith in the bandleader? Certainly, the chemistry might not be as tight as before, but consider what it takes to get this kind of a gig. My guess is the new guys can hold their own.

I'm still a fan of the pre-Quintet Quartet, with Eric Person and Gene Jackson. Dream of the Elders is a sublime recording. Fact is, I'm more than happy to let Holland do what he wants with whomever he wants; I assume I won't be disappointed - and I never have.

Billy Killson and his wife are having a baby; maybe have already had it by now! He'll probably be rejoining the group after Boston.
I think the drummer's name tonight was Nate Smith and he was slammin'!! The entire group was absolutely wonderful but I'm too tired to post more right now.

Well, I got the babysitter (miraculously), but the advance tix are all gone. I'll try to get a couple when the doors open at 6:30 tomorrow, but will probably end up at movie.

I sure hope you luck up walto, but I never knew the doors open as early as 6:30!!

The group was fantastic as always although I sorely missed Billy Killson's presence and contribution. The sub (Nate Smith, I think) was awesome although a bit over-bearing and much too loud, especially for that room and where I was sitting!! I stayed for both sets which I didn't plan on doing since the website said there would only be one.

I found that I had a smile on my face and was moving my bod during every tune except Steve's very poignant "Candlelight Vigil" which made me cry a bit. It's so satisfying when a performance can move one within such a wide range of emotions!

VERY disappointing also was that I missed Dave's interview on WGBH the other night at 10pm and I KNEW he was going to be interviewed by Eric and forgot!! OH, that just frustrates me so. Dave is so articulate and I just lap up everything he has to say!

It was a nice addition to the evening to meet Kevin after all this time. He seemed to really enjoy too! And we both got to interact with Robin a bit. He's pretty darn amazing! I just don't know how he deals with all his projects and his personal life as well!

I was just thinking about Steve Nelson last night and how much I love his playing!! I put him right UP there with the great vibe players today--Bobby, Steve, Joe Locke.

Val, what do you mean Robin's personal life??

The show was great but Kilson's absence was felt in my right ear!

Nate Smith, Kilson's sub, was waaay too loud for my dainty right ear, which was blown out many years ago (at a Foghat concert, of all things). By the middle of the second set, I was reduced to covering my right ear when the band really got going. I can't imagine what it was like to sit next to Smith's kit. His cymble crashes were just immense. After we left the show, my right ear was nearly shut down, as happens when it gets hammered for a while.

Oh well, as I said, it was certainly a great show. Robin was pumpin' away and Hart was top notch. It's surprising to read Steve's post above where he says that Hart didn't get much solo space on Wednesday night. Last night, I'd guess that Hart got more solos than anyone else, including Dave.... and did he use them well! I got Anotonio to sign one of his old Novus CDs, "For Cannonball and Woody". Man, was he laughing at the pictures on the cover. He looked so young.

Later,
Kevin

The Regatta Bar typically books name acts for a Wed-Sat gig. Specials, like Elvin Jones or McCoy Tyner, sometimes spill over to Sunday. Usually, the Wed. &/or Thur. shows are one price for both sets. The other nights, it's priced "per set" but if you buy both sets, they give you the second at half price. Also, the price goes up each night. Holland was $16/both Wed, $18/both Thur, $18/each Fri and $20/each Sat.

We were lucky enough to be close to the front of the line tonight and got a couple tix to the first set.

It was dynamite. Eubanks and Hart played some great, great solos and the tunes were beautifully put together. The drummer was rockin' too. Nelson (the vibist/marimbist) was the weakest link, but that's no great sin among virtuosi like this crew. Plus, he contributed a very nice ballad.

What a terrific gig. Anybody who thinks "jazz is dead" owes it to him/herself to get to Holland gig before he/she makes too much of a fool of him/herself by uttering this patent falsehood out loud.
