What's It All About: The Blindfold Test, the time-honored concept developed by jazz journalist Leonard Feather, traditionally consists of a musician's
responses to unidentified recordings. It has often been suggested that critics should be so tested. Tomorrow, musicians and critics will play recordings for each other and discuss them without the benefit of prior knowledge of the personnel.
Bethany Ryker (New School Jazz Department,WFMU), who has conducted graduate research on the history, parameters, and complications of Blindfold Tests, will moderate the discussion and inquire: How does one listen objectively? Does an artist's reputation determine the candor of our response? What happens when music beyond genre hits a traditionalist's ear? Do critics and musicians hear the same things?
Musicians & Writers On The Panel:
Howard Mandel --Down Beat Blindfold Test Giver
Frank J. Oteri -- editor,* NewMusicBox.org, American Music Center
Ted Panken -- Down Beat Blindfold Test Giver
Matt Shipp -- Pianist/Composer/Recoding Producer
