The new "Old Real Book" 6th Edition

Hal Leonard has just published a semi-clone of the old original "The Real Book".
The first thing I noticed when I got my copy was that the cover is paper and they used very light weight paper for the pages. And some of the pages are out of sequence, for example: Lush Life page 2 come three pages later than Lush Life page 1. They left out some of the old obscure fusion tunes but still kept in far to many of those useless charts. They did add a number of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Gershwin tunes.

I was sorry to see some of these great standards were
NOT INCLUDED:

Alone Together
Days Of Wine And Roses
The Dolphin
Gentle Rain
Goodbye Pork Pie Hat
Green Dolphin Street
In Your Own Sweet Way
Just Friends
Night And Day
Shadow Of Your Smile
Serenade To A Cuckoo

How about 'Hotel Hello', is that still there?

A jam session favorite.

You must be kidding, I don't get your point. "Hello Hotel" by Steve Swallow is not a standard at jam sessions, it's practicaly unreadable. And it is not included in the new edition. I guess about half of those obscure fusion era tunes are left out in the new edition.

Uh, is that a joke or something?

Of course it is...and it's hysterical to boot!

Although, to confess, I actually bought HH because of those PAGES and PAGES of those tunes in the Real Book.

I don't like to use the cute icons. I figured my brilliant rapier wit would translate easily without the wink.

I've never heard that record but what I've heard of Swallow I like.

It's always been a standing bandstand joke "what's it gonna be Hotel Hello".

No disrespect intended to Mr. Swallow.

I'm pretty sure those tunes were left out because of licensing issues, not because some suit made the arbitrary decision that they didn't need to be in there. Since this version is "legal" the composer/publisher must give permission, and if they say no, then the tune is out.

Good question, books seem vary. Real Book 1 = Eb6 /Cb7-Bb7 /Ebmima7/%
Jazz Fake Bk = Eb6 /Cb7-Bb7 /Ebma7/%
Jazz Library = Emi7-Eb7/Abmi7-Bb7-/Eb/%

I personally like #2, the Jazz Fake Bk changes but seems a lot of people are using the Real Book 1 as their Bible.

Yeah, you're probably right. Still, it's a shame that they're not included

All of those tunes are in this edition; originally to avoid duplication, probably:

The font is smaller in the new Hal Leonard version and the contrast is not very sharp. They used very low quality paper and ink.

More volumes to come?

Somewhere (in the 6th edition itself, I think, but I don't have it handy)
I noticed that the hint that more volumes are forthcoming.
The old real book set had three roughly-equal size volumes,
at least before they started identifying them by edition.
Some of these tunes will probably appear in the other volumes.

Despite the claim that they have "corrected all the mistakes", there
are some (possibly new ones) in the notes/changes in the 6th edition.

She may be thinking of "The New Real Book" is by Chuck Sher.

I looked for Days Of Wine and Roses again last night in my Hal Leonard Real Book and it's not in the table of contents or in the D title section.

Really. That's really strange, because I know she has the right one-- she showed it to me. Maybe they messed up or something...

Checked it twice and just now again for the third time. I find no "Days of Wine and Roses" in the table of contents under "D" for "Days" or in the chart section.

DrumUltima, sorry man,

Days of Wine and Roses is only in the Real Book 1 and The Colorado Book. I checked all the others, Real Book 2, Real Book 3, New Real Book 1, 2 and 3 by Sher Music, Hall Leonard Real Jazz Book and the Ultimate Jazz Fake Book. It is, however, also in the The STANDARDS Real Book by Sher Music Co. page 105; maybe that is the one she is talking about. Seems what Petro said was that about a "cloned" copy of the Real Book. So, maybe that is the misunderstanding here.

Keep vibing,

Vibeman

Cool New Real Book 6th Edition

They took out Serenade to a Cuckoo?.....They must've gone cuckoo...

Seriously, though, that 6th edition really is bad...I tried to take mine back...Hey Vibeman, thanks for those changes...they're much better than the ones in the book
