Steve Reid at the London Jazz Festival

On November the 18th, Steve Reid will be playing a as a part of the London Jazz Festival at The Spitz in London's east end.

Steve will be performing an abridged version of his solo drum and spoken word piece, Drum story, before being joined by a large international ensemble of musicians to perform a free improvised set to shape your minds and shake your asses!

The gig features an expanded version of the same line-up that played in April at the London Strong rooms bar. Among the musicians joining Steve Reid and myself (on reeds), will be Bass Saxophonist Tony Bevan, regular Eddie Prevost collaborator and founder of Londonimprov.com, Nathaniel Catchpole and bass player and composer Simon H Fell. Also Steve will be bringing two talented members of his own quartet - American soprano saxophonist, Chuck Henderson and the Russian pianist, Boris Netsvetaev - to join in with this large scale group improvisation.

When you read the résumé of drummer Steve Reid, you'll find it impossible to believe that all this is done by one man. He is a true pioneer of US left-field deep jazz and is steeped in musical history. He played in Sun Ra's Arkestra, was a Motown session drummer and backed James Brown at the Apollo! He was imprisoned during the Vietnam war as a conscientious objector and lived in Africa in the early 1970s. Steve Reid has also worked with Freddie Hubbard, Gary Bartz, Ornette Coleman, Lester Bowie, Fela Kuti, Leon Thomas, Miles Davis and many more.. Forty years of living drum history where African rhythms and the harmonic explorations of John Coltrane come together

Also, Steve Reid lived next to John Coltrane, worked in a department store with Ornette Coleman, has a son who is the drummer for 50 Cent, played drums on Martha and The Vandellas "Heatwave" (aged 14), released records on his own Mustevic Sound label in the 1970s and is a very cool person.

Tickets are available now through The Spitz box office (0207 392 9032) and from www.seetickets.com
