Favorite Newscaster's Voice
Which newscaster has the best combination of vocal qualities to deliver the nightly news? There has to be a parallel in critiquing jazz vocals vs. news vocals - intonation, dynamics, range, etc.
Who is your favorite and why?
I would say Sheppard Smith (Fox News) is my favorite. He has a rhythm to his rhetoric that really flows well and is has one of the best 'note choice' for selecting certain words to emphasis. His tenor has a nice resonance too.

Wow, I never heard that before. Too funny! I'm surprised he wasn't fired on the spot and sued.

I think Sheppard Smith is unlistenable
Brian Williams is OK - can't listen to Rather or Jennings
I thought Brokaw was OK - the voice is legendary - but after a while the deepness could get to me
guess I won't have to worry about that anymore - plus I don't have cable right now - I used to watch/listen to Laughing Lester on MSNBC
but my favorite is Allison (can never remember her last name as I am easily distracted) who was (is?) on MSNBC in the early afternoon - to my eyes and ears, she is just about the most perfect human being I have ever seen on the TV news

I always liked Peter Jennings and his blend of calm and slipped-through Canadianisms.

I gotta go with Brokaw. He's got such an amusing impediment. I don't know exactly how you would describe it linguistically, but to me it always sounds like he has a gob of green snot halfway down his throat. Or that he's pronouncing everything with a not so silent "g."
"Good (g)evening, (g)I'm Tom Browkaw. (G)You're watching Gen Bee Cee news."
But Drunk Carl on NPR is good, too. I have posted elsewhere my amazement with the percentage of NPR correspondants who lisp, garble, or speak with a charming subcontinental lilt. I think it is a job requirement.

Harry Shearer does a good take on him and his "L's".
Kwame Holman on Lehrer News Hour has a great broadcasting voice.

I like them too. When I used do a lot of business travel (mostly to boring places) I found their voices a comfort of sorts.
Even old Carl, although I wouldn't go as far as saying I like his voice.

Diane, God bless her, has a legitimate disorder with her vocal chords. The same one Robert Kennedy Jr. has. Something about spasms. But that just makes her the poster child for NPR, which won't employ you unless you talk funny.
Sometimes when I am listening to the Diane Rehm Show, I'll pull over to the side of the road and run around my car two or three times while she finishes the word "In nuh tuh reh eh eh ess tuh uh ing."
BFrank: yeah, it's something funny with his L's. Browkaw has a very soft, fluid L. But it is detectable in his pronunciation of other sounds, too.

Now, the funniest-talking NPR announcer was Susan Stamberg, no?
