Since We Have a Vacancy at JC...How About Deep?

I know this idea will scare a lot of people. Hey, I'm scared myself! I was thinking since Chris A. has huffed off the playground with his ball, we have a vacancy to fill here at JC. Why not reinstate the beloved (to some people) Dan D'Imperio, aka Deep?

Look, the cat has been locked out for how long now? Shouldn't he be up for parole by now? There are alot of new folks here who haven't had the benefit of his knowledge. The cat does know his music! And, maybe he'll behave now????

Mary -

You're kidding, right?

He wasn't sent packing for his bad breath and faulty social skills - he was sent packing because despite being warned several times he kept crossing the line. The line between being a pain in the ass and (to cite just one of many examples) threatening people.

As anybody who's made the wrong wisecrack in an airport security screening will attest - making threats, even if you're not planning on following up on them, is not only stupid, but perfectly reasonable grounds for ostracism.

The guy may not actually BE a sociopath, but the fact that he is perfecly capable of acting like one makes the difference negligable.

But there's another reason I'm less than enthusiastic about the idea. He repeatedly took advantage of Lois. He kept cajoling her into letting him come hang out here, and every time he treated her shabbily, by slowly morphing from his look-at-me-I'm-the-life-of-the-party persona, to his how'd-you-like-a-knuckle-sandwich? persona...slowly but inexorably changing from cute homeless kitty cat ...to tom cat who sprays on the kitchen counter.

Sean Penn and Russell Crowe are interesting and talented people too, but I'm not going to lend them my car so they can drop by for Thanksgiving dinner, you dig?

Do you really think that if Lois let him come back, he'd last long? How may times did she throw him out?

But you actually know the guy. What am I missing here?

I love the DEEPs posts. I also understand why he's not well liked.

I don't know if we have the technology, but could we default DEEP to ignore status and let the folks decide if they want to unignore him? This would allow new members to view the board without being subject to his wit or lack thereof and allow the active members to decide if he's worth their time.

I don't post too much on non-musical subjects except for sports - as far as the reasons for him being banned from the board, I was never invloved in those threads/dialogues so I have no opinion one way or the other

As far as if he is allowed and wants to come back, I don't care one way or another - but having to read his constant criticism and downtight insulting attitude towards the great living modern day master improvisors is not exactly uplifting.

Plus the act of insulting any jazz musician's music that doesn't fit into his narrow passe idea of what makes jazz good or great jazz is a bore.

To D'Imperio, the stylistic front of jazz drumming is still Philly Joe Jones

would like to hear him criticize Hamid Drake's drumming, because then the ytuth would be known about the old man's tired old lazy bullshit opinions on music, musicians and the listeners.

As far as the hoax that Danny "knows music like no one else" - part of that is true, he has a vast knowledge and understanding of part of the jazz tradition.

But he lumps all the rest into one category - that free jazz shot or whatever. And based on how much the mainstream has moved since he was a regular poster (3 or 4 years ago, at least?) - his arguments will only come across as even more inane than they were then

only saving graceis that he wasn't fooled by Sir Wynton

and he did actually listen to "Coming Down The Mountain"

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

sincerely,

Rotomontade

Pete, your pic. was so big, I couldn't figure it out.

Chaz, I am always so impressed by your well written, intelligent and thoughtful posts. You are really an interesting, cool guy. I'm glad I got to meet you in Montreal that time. We had fun, didn't we?

Anyway, you're right, everything you say is right. I don't know why Dan acts like such an idiot on this board. I do know him, he's a good friend of mine actually and I really enjoy our lunches together. He's always very nice to me but then, of course, he's in love with me...so there you go. I can hear him laughing now.

I really, really, really wish he'd be more like he really is in real life. I have not been able to figure out why he acts so weird on the boards.
It is some sort of self-destruct, look at me thing going on but it's beyond my psychological powers to figure it out. It's Lois' decision and I have a pretty good idea what she'll say.

Scott, with all due respect, you're actually nothing like Dan. I don't see where the comparision comes in.

I'll wager 2 to 1 that DEEP won't be let back on the board.

Oh, sorry, I thought I was Gordon for a minute there.

If DEEP were let back on, which in fact I would love to see happen if only to see a DEEP vs. Dolan thread, I predict he'd be gone within days. Mone would pull the plug as soon as DEEP stepped over the line, and we know how DEEP treats lines.

*Amen, Amen," Chaz!!! The only way I would even begin to change my mind about this is if there were proof that Deep had been *sober* for a year or more!! Aside from all his totally inappropriate behavior that Chaz accurately described, he was also lewd, obscene and totally insulting, especially to the women on this board. JM describes him as "beloved" but I don't know who else shares her opinion about that!

I'm all for letting DEEP back in ( and I imagine Clint H. would be as well )

after all ..we're ALL old farts that like bebop and it's predecessors musically ..

but: having said that:

I'm pretty sure Lois won't be having any of that, due to the many and varied non -musical violations he's prone to in the past. He can't ( or won't ) be confined by site rules, and insists on stepping over whatever lines are observed bythe rest of us ..

Too bad ..because I usually found him interesting.

I'm blushing, Mary.

Yes - Hangin' with you in Montreal was TOO much fun. I wish I made it to NYC more often so I could see you in your native habitat!

Your advocacy of Din is admirable. Really. That's what friends are for - to stick up for eachother. I have friends like that too, and sometimes find myself sticking up for people when they've made the wrong impression. I'm willing to ponder the possibility Dan isn't the prick he makes himself out to be. I'll take your word for it, even. But he sure spent a lot of time here trying to fool people.

You know, I'll bet more people would be willing to give him even more slack if he was some sort of brilliant artist. But I can't seem to find evidence he's much more than a journeyman with a bad attitude and a head for trivia. And I've looked.

The sad part is that if he had meant it when he promised Lois he'd shape up - if he'd been sincere - he wouldn't have a single opponent here. I could even probably get used to him being here if he could learn not to chew on the furniture and hump the dinner guests legs. He could be amusing the heck out of the newcomers and flirting with "the girls" right now. But as you said - something we don't quite understand makes him cross the line.

Dan definitely was a button-pusher on the boards. Having said that, he never (to my recollection) insulted me personally, so I say let him back on umitl he insults me, then kick his ass off.

Besides, he'd be kind of like the un-Crouch: he'd post all the time, and nobody would wonder why he didn't post more.

Don't hold your breath. Along with several other posters, I ignored Deep, even at his most vile (as when he childishly and disgustingly insulted some good friends here). I figured, rightly I think, that any response whatsoever would simply spur him on.

Somehow I missed the whole Chris A. leaving thing...

Wow, I am bummed. I liked him. I can't understand why he left though. Especially since Stanley won't post hardly on this site anyway.

What is his real last name (I want to look up his articles).

Thanks

Jared

An interesting statement, Mr. Reynolds.

Perhaps we can all learn a bit from this insight.
