Portraits in Black: An Original Special Captures The Sultry Sounds, Style And Soul Of Jazz Vocalist Dianne Reeves
Thursday November 11, 8:16 pm ET
ATLANTA, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Three-time Grammy award-winner Dianne Reeves, known for her venerable contralto vocals, will be featured on Black Family Channel's "Portraits In Black," Monday, November 15 at 9:00 p.m. (ET). Check your local cable guide for channel listings.
Reeves, whose voice delivers rhythmic virtuosity and improvisational ease, has the confidence and richness reminiscent of legendary songbirds Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Ethel Waters and Carmen. Recognized for her powerful storytelling instinct about her childhood, family and civil liberties, Reeves enthralls audiences around the world and reigns as one of the most significant singers in modern jazz.
Born in Detroit, Reeves moved to Denver with her mother and sister after losing her father at the tender age of two. Reared by many powerful women, Reeves received the confidence and security that she needed to develop the smooth, sultry sounds that are "distinctly Dianne."
Accredited with 15 albums and compact discs, Reeves is the recipient of the Ella Fitzgerald award and has performed around the world, including at the White House, Carnegie Hall, Montreal International Jazz Festival, and the Lincoln Center for Jazz. Critics describe her voice as a "starburst of song changing the musical landscape forever."
Host Lyn Vaughn chronicles Reeves' musical path during an interview at the Atlanta Symphony Hall in Atlanta, GA. "Portraits In Black" journeys the diva's impressive career which began in Chicago, when discovered by Jazz Trumpeter, Clark Terry at the age of nineteen.
