It's not a dedicated CD-burner, mind you; it's the CD/DVD-RW drive in my HP notebook computer. Now, in addition to data archiving, I can burn CDs at will. Still haven't had time to figure out how to convert LPs or cassettes, though. Sure would be nice.

Nice, but very time-consuming.

Hey Steve, come over to the Progressive Rock thread some time. I'd be interested in anything you have to say on the subject. Just ignore Larry and Scott going on and on and on and on about Rush

I'll up it just in case you want to take a look.

I have one but rarely use it. I don't like CD-R's much for music and would always rather the original. I only use it for copying CDs from box sets to play in the car, backing up data if I need to reformat my hard drive, or to store photos from my digital camera.

I can burn them in about 15-20 minutes total. Extract, arrange, burn, and print track list. As a result, none of my original copies travel in the car.

I've needed a burner for distributing cdr copies (to the media & such) of releases by most folks I have presented. It also comes in handy for taking oop Mosaic sets & the like out of the library or borrowing from friends & burning.

My Phillips finally gave up the ghost for burning purposes after maybe three years of good service. I still use it as my player since some of the burns it made wouldn't play on my old cd player. Now for burns I use the DVD and cd drives of my pc.

The burner I have is not hooked up to the computer. It's a shelf model.

With my new iMac ( my Xmas present to myself ), I got a utility called Roxio Toaster that's pretty slick.

..and just in time, because my trusty stand alone burner has suddenly become no longer trusty ..

Yes, and I love it. I have an internal Plextor Plexwriter CD-RW which is extremely reliable and built like a truck. I highly recommend Plextor for reliability, integrity and creating CDs, not coasters.

Some say they have, some say they don't have, but can we trust them? In my experience some don't know what kind of hardware they have.
Hell, the laptop I used for a week had three replacement units:
a cd-rom player, a dvd player and a zip drive, but no burner.

Have a burner. Not too thrilled with the quality of cd-r's. Recently read that the average life of a cd-r is 5-6 years.

I recently bought a DVD burner and reorganised some of my MP3 collection (mainly from emusic.com) from CD-Rs onto DVD-Rs.

On some of the CD-Rs I had burned during the last 4 years, some files or complete folders (albums) were unreadable. I cleaned the discs and tried several drives. It was mainly on Fuji and TDK CD-Rs that I bought at that time. When I burned the CD-Rs they were ok (the software checks data integrity after writing the CD). The discs had been stored in jewel cases and out of sunlight.

So if you have personal files that you can't find elsewhere (such as pictures, documents or your own music recordings), be sure to check the CD-Rs every few years, because even brand discs can deteriorate rather fast.

My Philipps crapped out in less than 18 months, so far as burning goes, so I said no in the poll, not thinking that I do my burning now with my laptop. Still, I'd like to have a quality dedicated burner one of these days. I'm waiting for them to work the bugs out and for the price to come down, consumer electronics being the only thing that does that overtime.

I've had no problem at all with CD-Rs, if cared for properly and carefully. I don't do much music playing in the car, so that might be part of it.

I've never used my "burner"...if that's what I can call my CD-RW drive on my laptop. I do have a question though since I need to copy some 4 minutes of video that I downloaded from my digital camera...how do I copy the video onto disk? And what is the appropriate media. I went into Rite Aid but the DVDs they had seemed mostly to copy movies and there was a warning that my drive might get damaged (for which they would not be held responsible). So...

Which kind of disks do I buy to copy this video clip onto (also what's DVD-R versus DVD+R)?

Do I need to format it (and how do I do that)?

Tippy, do you have a DVD burner or just a CD burner in your computer? Often there will be a combo drive that is read-only DVD and read & write CD.

I went hardcore after my Phillips died. Got a baby Tascam -- entry level studio unit -- because mostly I'm archiving LPs. The sucker is totally manual and has no high-speed capabilities, but it makes great discs and is built like a Mack truck.

In My Computer it shows up DVD/CD-RW. Under Recording in Properties, it mentions CD recording. There is no mention of DVD in the Recording section however (which I assume I would need in order to copy video). Strangely there are two hardwares listed one is Hitachi_DK23EA-40 (disk drive--maybe this was the old diskette drive) and TEAC DW-224E-A (DVD/CD-ROM). Hmmm, that looks like I can't record. I don't get it.

I have a Phillips stand alone which still works fine. I need it to transfer my lps and casettes to cd.

My next computer will have a separate cd/dvd burner so I can quickly transfer discs.

I have a Philips stand alone model (CDR 785) which is probably two or three years old and has performed well, especially for my non-audiophile standards. I want a Victorola for Christmas and I'll have to figure out how to wire the two together. Any ideas?

I have whatever the standard thingy is that comes with a Dell. I burn CDs for the car, and once in a while rouse myself to the tedious business of transferring music from LP to CD. It takes me hours to do a decent job of transferring--getting the LP as clean as possible; filtering out scratches and pops, but not filtering so much that the high end is lost; equalizing, etc. About one out of ten blank CD-ROMs are faulty, I find. And I still don't match what Kevin Bresnahan gets for quality. His copies of LPs are the gold standard, as far as I'm concerned.

You can burn your video clip to CD, you don't need a DVD burner for that. Simply set your burning software to data.
