Announcement: D.I.Y P.R. Workshop In N.Y.C. 11/21/04

[APOLOGIES FOR THE LAST-MINUTE ANNOUNCEMENT. IF THIS DATE AND TIME DON'T SUIT YOU BUT THE CONCEPT IS OF INTEREST, GO AHEAD AND GET IN TOUCH FOR A FUTURE DATE. THANKS TO LOIS FOR ALLOWING THIS TO BE POSTED.]

Lara Pellegrinelli, freelance journalist (New York Times, Village Voice, Jazz Times), and Steve Smith, classical-music editor and music staffer at Time Out New York (former Billboard columnist, publicist for BMG, Third Floor Media, and the Knitting Factory) will be collaborating on a "do it yourself" publicity workshop on Sunday, November 21 from 3 to 7pm, at a Manhattan location TBA.

The idea that inspired the workshop was simple. In the course of working on both sides of the media - both in publicity and as writers and editors - Steve and Lara discovered that many of the musicians they know have never seen another artist's press kit or had never had an opportunity to consult, even informally, with a publicist. They will bring sample press kits and examples of press bios that they have written. As writers, they will share what type of information appeals to them, the best ways to contact writers and present it, as well as how to plan for publication deadlines.

Those who participate are asked to bring in their own publicity materials (bio, press clips, photos, demos, etc.) and we will split into smaller groups to critique and work on them together. The musicians in past workshops have ranged from those fresh on the New York scene to well-known professionals. Feel free to forward this message to friends or students who may be interested in attending.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The workshop will be limited to 12 participants to assure individual attention with registration on a first come, first serve basis. Lara will register participants in the order emails are received and you will receive a confirmation message. The fee is $50, of which a $25 deposit must be paid in advance. Only once deposits are received will participants be informed of the address where the workshop will be held at a private residence in Soho. Cancellations must be given 48 hours advance notice.

As in the past, if there are significantly more people interested than spaces, we will consider adding a second date. Please let us know if you are interested in an alternate date, or might wish to host a workshop in the future.

Please contact Lara at lpellegrinelli@earthlink.net for more information.
