Howard Stern on Letterman

Is anyone out there catchin' this?

I know that Stern isn't everybody's cup of tea but he is absolutely correct about the arbitrary nature of FCC sanctions. I don't think I'm going to run out and buy a satellite box to catch Howard's show (I can't get it where I live and I always viewed it as an urban oddity I'd occasionally catch on the road). There's always E!.

Howard's right that it's a bad atmosphere for the free exchange of ideas when television in fairly major markets are afraid to show "Saving Private Ryan" on Veteran's Day because they're afraid they'll face fines.

Gonna go check him out on E! right now.

The show just hasn't been the same since Jackie left.

Thanks for the heads up, Cookie.

I've always felt that Howard Stern was a very mixed bag. His ego-to-talent ratio has always been in question with me, frankly. I'm mystified by his huge following, the only explanation for which (to me) is a combination of hero worship and sexual titillation. Cheap, predictable and frequent. Enough for many Americans, apparently.

Howard actually said the following on Late Night with David Letterman tonight ... "I'm walking away from an empire." Yeah, right. From a stagnant one in which you're challenged to a promising one in a burgeoning new technology in which you'll be untouched. What horseshit! From one empire to another.

Howard Stern is and always has been about two things in my estimation.

1. Ego
2. Money

Neither of those are necessarily bad things, but his portrayal of his role as a critically important broadcaster is so disengenous as to be laughable.

What's up with Howard's relationship with his former wife, Alison, after barking about how special she was for years? She's served her purpose for him, apparently. His children?

After some comments on Letterman's show tonight I think that Howard's ego is suffering mightily and his future self-esteem is in serious jeopardy. Afterall, there are only 700,000 Sirius subscribers at this time, when Howard's accustomed to 15-16 million viewers/listeners. He made a rather major point of that at the end of the show while holding up a Holiday-wrapped Sirius receiver and imploring his followers to buy one for Christmas.

Get over yourself, Howard!

He did just sign a $100 million contract with Sirius. I doubt he's too concerned about his future self-esteem.

I doubt that Howard would give two bits about the FCC if he were a copier salesman instead of a broadcaster of salacious material.

I think Ron's post is a good one.

I admire Howard for coming up with a schtick that made him rich and famous. I don't admire his narcissism nor his insensitivity and sometimes cruelty towards others.

I can't imagine listening to his dreck on the radio when I could be listening to music.

I don't watch Howard's show on cable, and I won't be listening on my Sirius receiver, either. Howard may or may not have a point about the FCC acting arbitrarily, but it seems to me that he uses the David v. Goliath thing as a marketing tool. Quite successfully, I might add.

I used to listen to the Howard Stern RADIO show (his t.v. show was just pathetically awful). I really liked his radio show and thought it was very funny--especially when they did the news. Howard is a smart, funny guy, imho.

Scott, yeah, I liked Jackie too and what was the name of that other guy--he was quieter than Jackie but he was with Howard since forever and I think they were friends for a long time. This guy was a writer and/or producer on the show. Do you know who I'm talking about?

Howard's wife, Allison, divorced Howard. I think the kids (3 girls) live with her but Howard sees them. I'm sure she made a BUNDLE in the divorce as Howard always went on about how he owes everything to her, how she stuck by him and believed in him etc.

I first heard Howard Stern on the radio in Philadelphia in 1989, back when the billboards said HoWEIRD Stern. I thought he was vulgar and stupid then, and I think he's vulgar and stupid now. Plus all the stuff Ron said

Fred.

I really get amused to read about what people think of Howard. Howard is smart and funny. Yes, some of his shtick gets a little old at times, but so what?

Ron, you seem to be the most misinformed party here. So let me clear up a couple of things for you.

Howard is truly the most self-deprecating person on the air anywhere in the world. The ego bit is pure shtick. This is likely THE biggest and most misunderstood thing about him that non-listeners feel. Watch his movie.

Allison left Howard, not the other way around. And when they had seperated, Howard still expressed a profound love for her, and talked on air about how much he missed her.
He also loves his girls immensely. He purposely kept them out of the spotlight so that they could lead a semi-normal life.

My advice? Stick with talking about people you know something about.

It was an interesting segment (3 actually). But also a blatent and shameless promotion for Sirius. I hope they paid for their 20 minutes of advertising. (yeah, right ...)

Talk about product placement!

I'm with Dolan, for once. Howard is actually quite a multidimensional and intelligent entertainer, even if the most prominent dimension is his purile sexual humor. He's also a brilliantly funny interviewer.

BFrank- According to Howard on his show, he actually had a bunch of shows (cable, network, daytime, etc.) pursuing him to come on and promote his move to Sirius. He decided to go with Letterman because he has the largest audience.

The first time I encountered Stern was in the early '80s when he came on after a guy named "The Greasman" in the DC area. This was when the concept of "shock jock" was new.

Anyway, DC101 fired Stern for one of his pranks. Remember when the Florida Air jet crashed into the 14th St Bridge over the Potomac River? The next day Stern calls Air Florida at National Airport and asks for reservations for a flight to the 14th St. Bridge.

He was gone in about a week.

I was under the impression that Fred was still with the show. I actually haven't heard the show for a couple of years.

Jackie left when they signed the last Infinity deal. They didn't offer him the kind of money that he wanted.

Remember, he had left the show a couple of times in the previous ten years over money. This time it was for good.

Oh my, the "Greaseman" aka Doug Tracht.

I remember Stern (and him) from those days too.

Now Tract got fired when MLK Day was enacted into law. He suggested we could get the whole week off if a bunch of blacks got killed. Funny comment working for a radio station in a majority black city like DC.

Then he got hired and fired again over some racial comment. I guess he couldn't help himself.

But can you imagine him and stern back-to-back? As a matter of fact, Tract was the star so Howard had to try harder.

Fred is still with the show; he doesn't say that much but he's a wizard with sound effects, and his imitation of Don Imus is hilarious.

Jackie has been replaced by Artie Lang, who is a whole lot funnier. The show is a much better now with Artie.

$100 million does not make one's self-esteem.

I liked Stuttering John's interviews, particularly the one where he asked the Dalia Lama, "Do people say to you 'Hello, Dalai?'"

I see. Scott Dolan, Priest of Howard, fill us in on The Truth.

Next thing you know he'll be telling us what color our shit ought to be. White and sweet, like his. Ain't that right, Scotty?

I disagree.

I thought the show really went downhill after Jackie left.

Artie just isn't funny, IMO.

I dig Howard, but the Howard I like best was the Howard on Letterman last night.

I really don't dig Artie. Maybe he'll grow on me. My favorite was Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf, may he R.I.P.

Stern has done some funny things in his career, but the shock schtick has just worn old with me. I don't pay much attention to him at this point. If I want to see girls taking their clothes off, I'll just ask one of the college girls I know.

I don't know.

Taking into account how funny the show was back then, and coupling that with the fact that Jackie wrote so much of that stuff.........

Well, I'll have to disagree with you.

Cookie,

Yeah, Hank was the greatest.

I realize humor is subjective but you are so fucking wrong on this. If Jackie is so great, where is he now?? Jackie was a bit funny with his stump the jokeman stuff but once you got beyond that there wasn't much. Plus he let his untalented idiot skank wife hog too much of the spotlight. One of the funniest things Howard did was rag on her mercilessly.

Artie is very funny; he used to be on Mad TV and was funny there too. Howard has turned into a bit of an assclown and Artie fills the comedic void; take him away and the show is total shit.

Right.

And when Jackie would leave the show temporarily back in the 90's the show went to shit as well.

Besides, you're ignoring a point I already made. Jackie wrote a great deal of the things you heard on the show back then.

So if he is so untalented, why was the show so funny back then?
