The finest duo CD I've heard lately is "Hues of Blues" (Concord) w/ Walter Norris and George Mraz.

Alexander, what is this recording like? Ward on clarinet? What label? I'd like to hear more of his clarinet work. Look out for a nice new CD by the Simon Fell Quintet on Red Toucan. Four Compositions by Fell on two discs.

Not an album, but the alpha & omega of duos is Weather Bird.

Too many great piano duos to mention, but Kenny Drew & NHOP was about as good as it gets, and Red Mitchell did great albums with Jimmie Rowles & Kenny Barron.

Some favorites of mine have already been listed: Rivers & Holland, the Healers, Sempre Amore, Leaf Palm Hand, Mu.

I prefer Rava with Bollani to Blake (Montreal Diary B, Rava Plays Rava).

For Feldman & Courvoisier I find Music for Piano & Violin MUCH better than Masada Recital.

Manne & Freeman, The Two, counts as a full album since it was originally released alone as a 10-inch.

I haven't heard it in years, but I remember Roach & Shepp, The Long March being excellent.

Best Brazilian jazz duo - Cesar Camargo Mariano & Romero Lubambo - Duo.

Both Bill Evans/Jim Hall albums.

Chick Corea & Gary Burton - Crystal Silence.

Yes, Ward is on Clarinet & on Alto Saxophone. But he is performing on clarinet a majority of the album. It was on Incus, but I believe it is unavalible now. It is a quite a quirky album, Mr.Noble definetly displays his Han Bennink influences.

Alexander

Not a full album, but the 2 McCoy Tyner / George Adams duets on Things Ain't What They Used to Be are magical.

I wish there were a Volume 2 of this -- this is my favorite DD Jackson-led disc (although I like his playing on Billy Bang's 'Bang On!' best of all).

You have to get their other duo album before DIW/Avant becomes unavailable in the U.S.

I will, Pete! I saw your earlier post. The Masada was my first exposure to Sylvia's playing.

The Kondo/Lovens LP is great! I wasn't thrilled with the Schweizer/Carl album though, maybe I need to listen again - its been a few years since I listened to it last.

WHat label is the Christmann/Lehn one on? Lp or CD? And seeing it mentioned reminds me how much I like the Christmann duo with Mats Gustafsson on Okka (can't remember the title).

And, in that strange way that brains make connections - Christmann recorded a couple of discs on Concepts of Doing - I also remembered that there is a great duo album of Alexander Fragenhein and Phil Durrant called Duo Lock.

My Bennink duo appraisals (obviously of those with which I'm familiar):

w/Melford Eleven Ghosts--pretty much sublime start to finish, a big favourite since its release, "Which Was Is That" tears the walls down

w/Eskelin Dissonant Characters--never liked this at all, I find it quite dull but I can't imagine a horn would make an easy (and sole) foil for Han

w/Douglas (forgot the name, off Songlines)--ancillary to the above, not a good pairing on a couple levels, but the "Too Close for Comfort" take is priceless

w/Cecil Spots, Circles and Fantasy--never liked this at all, listen to it rarely, really crappy sound, too

w/Nabatov Chat Room--really effective pairing, recommended (thanks Dan G!)

Can't forget these two (seeing Schaumann's name in this thread jogged my memory):

Schlippenbach/Sunny Murray - Smoke

Sclippenbach/Tony Oxley - Digger's Harvest

Jeez, I could have written this - its dead on with my opinions of these albums. Have you heard MiHa, the duo with Misha M from mid-90s? Its ok, but the animosity between the two is obvious and Han keeps wanting to mess with Misha. Typical. I haven't heard the Schweizer, really should get more of her stuff.
