Boston to End 329-Year-Old Ban on Native Americans

What? When is this liberal activism going to end??

Nation in Brief
New York Times p. A10
Fri. Nov. 26, 2004

BOSTON--Mayor Thomas M. Menino (D) took the first step Wednesday toward repealing a 329-year-old law that orders the arrest of all American Indians who enter the city. The law has not been enforced for centuries, but tribes have been trying to win a repeal for years. The City Council passed a resolution in favor of repeal last year; the final action must be taken by the state legislature.

This was an act that was passed during the King Philip's War in the 17th century. Sort of a latter day "patriot act".

I think it was an antique patriot act, not a latter day one. But regardless, where will these Massachussetts radicals draw the line? Native Americans? IN the city!?! This is anarchy.

Bingo! When you finally smell where the money is, you're on the right track in Boston politics.

That's white of them.

Looks like my Blackfoot brother-in-law flew under their radar screen, while working at Harvard for a few years, late 90s.

My first reaction when I read that was "this is stupid". But Canada has probably the same kind of laws, settled a long time ago whatever they wanted to prevent back then, and not used anymore.

Saw in the paper glance yesterday that Alabama still has the Jim Crow laws on the books. Now the controversy is whether to remove them.

Excellent point: this Boston change of heart doesn't forbode any change in the law that says Goody can be arrested the moment he sets foot on the East Coast, does it?

Nah, the Goodspeak laws went out with speakeasys.

Cambridge might have a problem with him, though...

They're still on the books in VT. And we're watching. And waiting.

Missed this one earlier.

Oh my.

What's next? Negroes eating in the same cafe as upstanding white folk? This country really IS going to hell.

I wonder if Tim is like a girlfriend I had who went to UC Davis. When I told her I lived in Virginia, she said she heard New England was beautiful. I said, yes it was. But Virginia wasn't in New England. She said "I thought it was one of the original colonies." I said, yes it was. She said, "Then I don't get it." I said, let's go get a drink or something.

Gary,

They actually held a vote in Alabama to repeal the segregation laws. The repeal failed.

And people actually sounded surprised.

"Sweet home Alabama. Where the sky's always blue..."

But will the Red Sox let them play.

I wonder if there are current laws that will seem as ridiculously exclusive as this in 50-75 years.

Hmm. Gary, did Menino also announce the scrapping of the prohibition of same-sex marriages between Native Americans?

The gay marriage bans that passed in 11 states last month come to mind.
