Blues Singer Sues Shrink

Famed blues singer Gloomy Gus "Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me" Johnson is suing his psychiatrist -- for making him happier!

"I can't sing the blues when I'm feeling good. It ruins my authenticity!" says Johnson.

Johnson was ordered to see a shrink for "anger management" after he attacked a customer in the bar where he was singing who kept requesting another singer's songs. "That idiot kept asking for 'Robert Johnson' songs. I don't do songs by that hack," Johnson says.

Johnson, who made a career out of singing such hard-luck ditties as "You Think YOU Got It Bad? Listen to THIS!" "I Lost My Gal, My Best Friend, and My Dog -- In An Hour!" "I Will Self-Destruct" "Gloomy" and "I Wish I Was Dead" says that the psychiatrist not only helped him deal with his depression, but improved his disposition so much that he got a new girlfriend and dog.

Long-time fan Jimmy Mope says that the last time he saw Johnson perform, he was disappointed.

"He was wailing his hit 'Life Sucks' but he was smiling, winking at his girlfriend!"

Mope is not alone. Johnson's fans are leaving in droves.

Ironically, that might be good news for Johnson. "I'm working on a new song: 'I Lost My Fans,' " he said.

That's so funny, Lois. Just yesterday, I was thinking about writing a blues about the fact that since I'm finally happy, so I can't sing the Blues no mo' (or at least I don't have 'em any more--much that is)! I was gonna call it "No Blues Blues."

But seriously, I can relate to this guy in so many ways. Reminds me of the line from the song "From This Moment On" that says, "From this lovely day, no more blue songs, only whoop dee doo songs...."

Peter Leitch (who I know you're a big fan of Cookie) told me yesterday when I called them to wish them a Happy Thanksgiving) even those he's Canadian told me this story about John Cage - rumor had it that when he went to a shrink - the doctor told him, once he through with therapy - he'll write more music. To which Cage replied, " Doc, that's my problem, I wrote too much music as it is!"

Chandler Travis, resident eccentric music-maker from Cape Cod, has a great song for the occasion called "So Sue Me, I'm Not Unhappy."
