Search Function
Hi,
Anybody notice any oddities with the search function lately? Seems that just about any term I key in returns results only up to April 10th or 11th. I tried many terms and names, ones that I see used all the time in recent days and weeks and still the same. The only word that turned up any posts past April 11th and up into recent days was “jazz”. But that’s the only one I had luck with...

Yes, Ellery. I've found the search function to be hit-or-miss quite often, myself. In fact, yesterday I was searching for a thread and entered one, then two, then three "key words", all of which I knew were contained within the thread name. Zero results! Finally, out of desperation, I forwarded page-by-page in the forum until I found the thread I was looking for. Then, just for grins, I went back to the search feature and pasted in the actual thread title. You guessed it ... zero results!
Lois or Moné, any ideas?

I just searched Thorne and got up through today in both IE and Netscape. Then I did John Coltrane and got only through April 10th
then I tried Dulfer and got nothing.... weird... seems like a bug and perhaps Mone can figure it out, if not I'll go to befriender as well as vbulletin. This is the newest version of vbulletin and indeed there might be some bugs
Ellery - I also have some good news for you - as soon as befriender can do it, the archives will "untruncated" he has the raw database! So soon my friend
Best Lois

Glad that you noticed some inconsistencies too, Lois.
I just tried a search in Archives and it was also a bust. Here's hoping that a bug will soon be found and squashed!

Earlier today, I ran a search on the board and wasn't getting anything, but a few minutes ago it was fine.
I did some research on search function problems with VBulletin, and all of them are related to either database consistency or system resources of the server that the database resides on. SQL database searches can be quite a drain depending on the size of the database. It may be that at points of high activity that there aren't enough system resources to run a search and it returns nothing as a default.

Moné, since this is a dedicated server with more than enough bandwith and 1.2 g ram-- do you think that applies to us?

Hi Lois & Moné,
I just tried again (Sunday evening) with the search term “hatOLOGY”. The only return I got was from one post back in April. That word however shows up twice in the recent “Hat Hut” thread in May.
On the other hand a search for “Hat Hut” will turn up that thread.
Also seached "Coltrane" and got only 5 results, all from early April.
Lois, glad the archived threads can be made whole again...

It's definitely possible. The bandwidth doesn't have anything to do with it and are many factors other than the memory: processor speed, errors in the operating system, other processes running on the server, problems with the database... heck, it's possible the motherboard may not even be using the full 1.2 GB.

I'll send this thread on to befriender. Moné do you think it's a bug within this version?

How can I search for a phrase? I gets hits on every post that mentions any of the words, and that's often too much to sift through.
The FAQ section seems to allow searching for a whole phrase, but not the regular search feature.

Good question, Steve. I don't know the answer, but I stay away from phrases with common words, instead use the poster's name, if I can narrow it down, uncommon keywords that may've been used in the conversation, that is if it's a dialogue you recall...

Actually I was looking for references and opinions on a group whose name is a phrase. I know what you mean, though, if I'm searching for a specific post that I incompletely remember.

How about unusual band member names or combo of lat names?

Worth a try, Cem, but I was looking to see if anybody listened to them and if so what they thought of them, and most likely such posts wouldn't include names.
The general search question about phrase-search has come up before for me here, in other contexts.

Steve--
If one can search by phrase (other than in the FAQs search, as you note), it's news to me. It's almost 4 a.m. here, and I'm too braindead to post workaround suggestions. But I'd love to look around if you'll tell me what the group is in this case.

Thanks, Rita -- the group is secondary to the general question, which as I say has come up before.
The question on the group has actually become somewhat irrelevant at this point, but here's the scoop: In the process of cleaning up my studio I can across an ancient scrap of paper on which I had written "Spiritcatcher -- decandanz?"
A little poking around led me to believe I had recommended to myself something I'd heard on the radio from the album Spiritcatcher by the group Dead Can Dance. I did my search on Dead Can Dance and came up with 93 hits, threads all over the board. That led to my question.
In the meantime, I found the one album by the group I had (Toward The Within) and began to play it, deciding by the third cut that I either didn't like them or wasn't in the mood for them now.

Yes, must be Spiritchaser. Thanks, Timolean! Been far too longer to remember the cut, but I'm going to give a listen to it in the store next time, see if it grabs me.

SqDCSteve--
Sorry. I went on a long hiatus from the board shortly after I posted the reply above, and I've long since forgotten what I'd discovered.
Timoleon--
