Bill Henderson and René Marie represent two generations of master jazz storytellers and musical mood painters. Balladeer Henderson has been dubbed "as remarkable and fine a jazz singer as can be found in the garden of jazz delights." Hailing from Chicago, and now residing in Los Angeles, he is making a rare east coast appearance for these concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center's new home, Frederick P. Rose Hall.
René Marie's new release on MaxJazz entitled Serene Renegade, contains mostly original tunes that she wrote. After 20 years of singing along with records by Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughan, she took to the stage at the beckoning of her son, Michael.
Bill Henderson, a vibrant, blues-influenced singer with rhythmic drive in the style of Joe Williams, is most noted for his legendary work with jazz pianist Oscar Peterson and more recently with bassist Charlie Haden. Mr. Henderson also has a rich history performing with Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and Ramsey Lewis, and has an established acting career. He has appeared on many TV shows, including the Cosby Show and ER. Mr. Henderson had a hit in 1958 with Horace Silver's Senor Blues. Recent performances include a date with Charlie Haden at the Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival in 2000 and a September 16, 2004 gig at Charlie O's in Los Angeles.
René Marie left her day job at a Richmond, Virginia bank in 1998 to pursue a career in singing. Within two years, she finished her first CD, performed at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C. and was signed by MaxJazz. Her 2003 release was in the top 20 on the Billboard Jazz Chart. As Ms. Marie puts it, "My niche is that I'm nicheless. I like taking music that you don't normally think of as jazz, changing it all around and playing it as jazz. If jazz is really improvisation, let me improvise." She was featured in the December 2004 issue of JazzTimes magazine.
