I'm surprised Montana scored so high.

If there's any veracity to this whatsoever, it would seem to support the increasing anti-intellectualization of the US.

...this is supposed to be a surprise??

Still, whether these charts have any bearing on reality or not, I am tired of hearing anything about the election since none of it makes any difference.

Not really. It's an average.

Since moving to North Carolina from Massachusetts, I have thought that people here are a bit slower. The real kicker, however, is that I also thought people in South Carolina were not just slow but actually kinda dumb. It is strange to see what you thought were Yankee prejudices turn out to be fact. Well, sorta fact.

And what the hell is wrong with Virginians?

My wife said people with an IQ of 85 are morons. So I looked it up, and she's wrong. Here's a rough and ready breakdown from IQTest.com

Intelligence Interval Cognitive Designation
40 - 55 Mentally disabled (Less than 1% of test takers)
55 - 70 Learning difficulty (2.3% of test takers)
70 - 85 Below average
85 - 115 Average (68% of test takers)
115 - 130 Gifted
130 - 145 Genius (2.3% of test takers)
145 - 160 Extraordinary genius (Less than 1% of test takers)
160+ "Unmeasurable" genius

DC seems to be missing; I guess they didn't care about a voting jurisdiction that isn't a state. Missouri seems to be missing too; all I see is Mossouri.

I give the findings in the chart no credence whatsoever.

Misspellings are an everyday occurance.

Don't poo poo these findings just because of that.

No, I think that the attribution of sources stinks, and I don't believe that some British firms administered IQ tests to representative samples of adults in the United States.

Hate to upset your binary world-view, Scott, but not all Democrats are pure liberals, and not all Republicans are hard-core conservatives on all issues. It's likely that we'll see significant division in the Republican party as the moderates become more aware of who they're allied with.

The chart is debunked at Snopes (Urban Legends Reference Pages), here.

You're no fun at all.

So I'm back to merely supposing that South Carolinians are dumber than North Carolinians. Too bad, I liked the idea of real statistics.

I apologize for the bogus info, and thanks, Bluenoter, for doing the research, though I still suspect this is not that far from the truth.

Here are some real stats from the National Center for Education Statistics. The Red State scores are surprisingly high, but note the proportion of students who actually took the test in each state. Ranking those proportions would create a division similar to the questionable IQ chart.

You didn't link to the most recent stats listed. Here they are:

http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d03/tables/dt134.asp

The heading of the 2003 table is slightly different from the heading of the 2002 table, but if you look at the source at the bottom of each table, you'll see that the two tables cover the same thing.

Note that we're now talking about high school seniors' SAT test scores, not adults' IQ test scores, and we're no longer talking about the election year.

She ruined it for me.

I wanted to conduct my own IQ test. Foiled!!

Oh well.

Finch and Jared scored incredibly low. GG actually scored higher than I thought, but still average. Rita was the only one to perform highly.

And Groover? Hahahahahahahaha................

This "chart" is so old, I can't remember the first time I saw it. Couple years ago, at least.

So, in the battle of the Nitwit Stars the score is now:

Mo Noyz - 1
Finch/Jared braintrust - 0

Yeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!

Game on, baby!!!

Thanks, Larry, but I spoiled a lot of the fun.

Hell, I'm skeptical about even statistics from legitimate sources. Lies, damn lies, and--you know.

I can't recommend Snopes (Urban Legends Reference Pages) highly enough. Its search engine is great, too.

Heredity and environment are both involved, so it's still a reasonable indicator. Intelligence measurements probably don't vary that much from year-to-year for an individual, and using data from multiple years only strengthens any conclusion drawn. It's certainly impractical to test every 2004 voter, so approximation and inference are the only tools available. The government does this regularly to guide decision-making, though Republican law-makers may have a greater tendency to rely on feelings over facts. Statistics can be misleading, but they are just as often revealing.
