Favorite Live Sets in 2004
Ain't nothin' like hearing it live. Some of my favorites were right in my backyard. Others contributed to the need for a new set of tires:
-Cecil Taylor Big Band - on his 75th birthday - @ Iridium
-Sabir Mateen/Raphe Malik/Steve Swell/Matthew Heyner/Mike Thompson -
@ Detroit Art Space in December
-Sonore (Gustafsson/Brotzmann/Vandermark) - @ Kraftbrau
in Kalamazoo, MI. in September
-Joelle Leandre & India Cooke - @ Guelph Jazz Festival - 9/11
-Julius Hemphill Sextet w/Oliver Lake - @ Jazz Standard, NYC in March
-The Thing (Gustafsson) w/Joe McPhee - @ ACME festival
in Athens, Ga. in April
-Other Dimensions in Music + guests - @ CBGB Anniversary Party in November
-Matt Lavelle/Raphe Malik/Roy Campbell/Flip Barnes/Will.Parker/Mike Thompson @ Fusion Arts Gallery during Vision Festival
-Tribute to Kowald w/Sirone/Silva/Parker/Grimes & Charles Gayle
@ Vision Festival
-Vandermark Five @ ACME Festival in Athens, Ga.
OR
-Sabir/Silva/Warren Smith @ Fusion Arts Gallery during Vision Festival

ARCHIE SHEPP/ROSWELL RUDD QUARTET featuring Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille @ the Iridium (can't remember the date).
It was an awesome show, probably one of the best I have ever seen.
The last show before that was actually here in Tucson in 2003 I saw Evan Parker, with Shlippenbach and Lytton. That was a great show too.
Alas, I live in Tucson now...just for now...

Damn. I had to leave Guelph to drive home the night they played there. I probably missed a great set.

I think they were there the whole week. I saw them on a tuesday night. I said this already in other threads but to be 80 something years old or damn near so, those guys tore it up. And they are all just as cool as they were in the 60s. All top notch musicians.

Charles Lloyd/ Zakir Hussein at the Healdsburg Jazz Festival
John Scofield 4tet at Yohi's
Both outstanding shows!
And a couple of mind-blowing performances by cats backing me up at my dances:
Rusty Gauthier, leader oF New Riders of The Purple Sage, was off-the-charts at a dance we did in at The Peach Orchard in Dry Creek Valley in August, brilliant on electric guitar and dazzling on banjo, fiddle and mandolin.
And an up an coming fiddler named Alice Fitzwater shocked everybody with her playing at the Healdsburg Food Pantry Benefit Dance, riding her fiddle through consistently excellent western swing and capping the evening off with the most brilliant and thrilling version of "Devil Went Down To Georgia" I've every heard.
It's a privelege to work with musicians this great!

I might be missing some, but contrary to my expectations earlier this year, I ended up seeing quite a number of shows.
Conrad Bauer solo at Jazz a Mulhouse (France), 28th of August
Anthony Braxton solo at Perspectives 2004 (Sweden), 24th of October
Per Henrik Wallin/Han Bennink at Perspectives 2004 (Sweden), 21st of October
Gush w/Philipp Wachsmnann at Perspectives 2004 (Sweden), 23rd of October
Vijay Iyer/Rudresh Mahanthappa (Raw Materials) at North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), 10th of July
Ben Allison & Medicine Wheel at North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), 11th of July
Solveig Slettahjell and the Slow Motion Orchestra at Kongsberg Jazz Festival (Norway), 1st of July (not sure)
Mujician at L'europa Jazz Festival (France), 7th of May
Vandermark 5 at Banlieues Bleues (France), 10th of March
and also possibly one of the the two The Thing w/Joe McPhee shows (at Mulhouse and Kongsberg). On retrospect, it also looks like Atomic and Scofield/Swallow/Stewart at Kongsberg were actually pretty good concerts.

My wife, Chris, has finally decided to stop going with me to live jazz so I have cut back considerably ... not exactly sure why though!

One particularly among others, if only because I waited 20 years or so to have an occasion to attend such a date: Ralph Towner solo at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris last July.

My top two albums of the year - both live.
Too bad all you myopic northern hemisphere chauvinists will no doubt be too blind, too arrogant or too lazy to check 'em out!
Mark Isaacs - Keeping The Standards (Vorticity). Recorded live at the basement in Sydney with jay Anderson and Adam Nussbaum.
Mike Nock's BigSmallBand - Live (ABCJazz): The great pianist leads an incredible aggregation tearing it up on amazingly fine tunes, by turns funky, worldly, thrilling and hard-swinging. Or often all at the same time.
EDIT: Whoops - just realised this is about live sets, NOT live albums. But I'm gonna let it stand, as I did see the people concerned live with similarly impressive configurations. Nock was easily the best gig of this year's Wangaratta Jazz Festival.

Haven't seen a lot, having not left Toronto for the most part, but the concerts that stand out are Michiel Braam/Frank Gratkowski; Stahlsbla; Bud Shank/Phil Woods; Fred Hersch/Don Thompson; & Open Loose.

Always was very keen on Thompson's interplay with Jim Hall. Fine bassist. Saw 'em round about '75.

I'd forgotten about that Mateen set. That's another for the list. Good one. Burnt Sugar was good, too. I liked them better live than on CD.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some real doozies, but these spring to mind:
* Paul "Wine" Jones @ Mercury Lounge, NYC
* (some of) The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band playing at a 4th of July picnic somewhere way back in the Mississippi countryside (as seen in my avatar)
* Nathaniel Mayer @ Pianos, NYC
* Other Dimensions in Music @ various NYC locales
* Triptych Myth / Charles Gayle Trio @ Tonic, NYC
* No-Neck Blues Band @ some Mexican joint, Brooklyn
* Isaiah Owens @ Barbes, Brooklyn

Nick, I spoke with a friend of mine from Cleveland, who was in Chicago for a week during this time. He mentioned these two shows and one by Frode Gjerstad/Peter Brotzmann/Paal Nilssen-Love, and Frode's bassist (can't recall the name) as three killer shows in one week's time.
Apparently, for the Gjerstad set, Bobby Bradford was to be on the tour in the quartet but cancelled. For the Chicago show, Brotzmann was still in town and joined Frode's trio.

Sylvie Courvoisier with Vincent Courtois, Ikue Mori, Cuong Vu & Gerald Cleaver at Tonic.
Portal, Sclavis, Texier & Humair in Montreal.
Solomon Burke at B.B. King's Blues Club.
Salif Keita at Spirit.
Ornette at Carnegie Hall.
Andy Bey at Pearl's, SF.
Revolutionary Ensemble at Vision Festival.
Dave Liebman/Ellery Eskelin quartet at 55 bar.
String Trio of NY at Cornelia Street Cafe.
Bobby Watson & Horizon at IAJE.
Bley/Peacock/Motian at Birdland.
Charles Tolliver Big Band at Birdland (I think that was this year).
Cesar Camargo Mariano & Romero Lubambo as part of a Jobim/Getz tribute at Carnegie Hall.
Chuck Brown at the Barbecue Battle in D.C.
Ran Blake, solo, at Cobi's Place.
I'm sure a bunch are slipping my mind.

Yeah I was planning to go to the Gjerstad show too but I decided not to when I heard Bradford wasn't going to make it. Then I found out Brotz sat in...
Oyvind Storesund was the bassist.

Here in the black hole of improvised music I gotta catch what little I can:
Sam Rivers Trio @ Cuyahoga Community College Festival
Brotzmann/Drake/McPhee @ Buffalo, NY
Vandermark 5/Atomic @ Beachland Ballroom
Open Loose @ Dearborn, MI
Gary Lucas @ Bowery Poetry Center
Is that all there is!?!? Talk about pathetic; maybe I'm forgetting something, although if I am how good could it be?? The good news is that Frisco was at 60% of them, even if he didn't mention any of them in his list, which should tell you how *great* my list is. The really good news is that I saw Rivers, McPhee and Brotz, all for the first time.

Capt., I might have included Open Loose if I'd have caught more of the set. I was running around trying to take care of business and really couldn't sit and enjoy. But listening to the tape, I discovered that it was a great set.
Was that Brotzmann/McPhee/Drake stuff in Buffalo this year? Seems like ages ago. Great stuff as well.
