Same sex marriage on the brink of becoming Federal law in Canada
Today, in a press conference in Ottawa, Prime Minister Paul Martin announced that a bill would be introduced to legalize same sex marriages. This is not a bill that is, assuming it is passed, interpretable by the provinces, but will be Federal Law. The bill will be presented for approval after the New Year.
This is being done, with the members of the party in power, in a minority government, being told that they must support it, under the auspices of the Canadian Rights and Freedoms Act, which guarantees equal treatment under the law.
This law will not compel churches, synagogues, temples etc. to perform same sex marriages, but civil law will recognize the legality of marriage between same sex couples.
There is already protection for same sex couples, who are allowed to have their partners covered by their medical insurance and pass on property to them, should one of them die. The same rights to same-sex dependants in the military and other government organizations, as well as in major private sector companies have existed for years.
The reason that Martin is pressing for marriage, should these and other couples want to get married, is to extend equal rights under the law.
It's no big deal and certainly wasn't a plank in Martin's election campaign.

I started to like Paul MArtin after his speech, when president Bush left the country a few weeks ago...
About that topic, I have mixed feelings about marriage. But IMO there is no reason why same sex couples couldn't have the same services than different sex couples...
They pay the same taxes.

Which freedoms are those, Darryl, that we don't already have??
BTW, I apologize to those of you who were puzzled by the thread title [Canadariage??]. I tried to edit the title, but couldn't change it. Oops.

Must be nice to joke about the lack of someone else's equality. I find that incredibly arrogant and ignorant of you monte.

This thread is supposed to be a hopeful one. The idea that anyone would not be accorded the same rights as anyone else is incomprehensible to me.
What harm could come of couples, whatever their sexual orientation, wanting to publicly promise to love each other, for the rest of their lives??
Considering that traditional marriages between opposite sex couples have a 50% chance of swirling down the bowl, what is the harm in legalizing the unions of anybody who wants to at least try to make a life together??
Lord knows it's difficult for anyone to make such a promise, so more power to anyone who wants to give it a shot.

So does that mean that I should be able to marry my brother AND my sister, as well as the mailman and his love slave Frank?
After all, we're all consenting adults, and are entitled to the same rights as everybody else. Please don't discriminate against us polygamists. We have rights too.

Sure willy, that's what it means. Marry your brother and your sister and the mailman and his love slave Frank. Why does the dialogue always come down to that?? You know it's ridiculous.
Wasn't it Rick Santori [sp?] who even dragged in the idea of beastiality, when discussing this??
If traditional marriage guaranteed an Ozzie and Harriot world, then everything would be wonderful. But, it doesn't. There are already thousands of same sex couples, families raising children, or not raising children, who certainly are not like those who already are involved in incest or beastiality. Same sex couples are two people who want to get legally married and forge a life, just like heterosexual couples. Maybe their marriages will work out. Maybe their marriages will end. Just like heterosexual couples. They are no threat to the traditional family, in fact their families are quite often as boring and mundane as traditional ones are.

I hate it when people say that.
People said the same shit about black having equal rights. They said, next the dogs will want to vote.
Seems a terrible comparison to make now, as someday the above statement will age and reveal its total ignorance and bigotry.

Jared--
Sometimes it's hard to tell what you stand for. Please make it clearer by not using homosexuality as a joke or an insult, as you did in the thread Most fascinating??!!??. Here are some comments that you made to people who didn't find Paris Hilton attractive:

I use the term gay or queer in the same way all my friends do (many of which are gay) and it is totally appropriate. They don't take offense to it. So I am not going to charge the words with any baggage either.
Unfortunately without inflection and other vocal devices, much of what I sometimes say gets misinterpreted. That is the drawback to the written word.
As for you little man, I call you that cause of your avatar. As I explained before I always think you are yelling at me, and i am just having fun with ya. You can't have too thin a skin here (as has been beaten into me) willis so get used to it.

Willy--
My comments to sonic1 are in no way meant to support what you and Monte have posted in this thread.
Jared--
In the Paris Hilton thread, you were quite clearly using being gay as a joke and an insult. That's what I'd like to see you stop doing.

As I explained to you in a previous thread your name calling does nothing, I was just curious as to why you feel the need to do it. I thought having one GoodSpeak was enough. Before that it was Deep and further back it was Conan (of JCS fame).
Oh well. The more personal attacks the merrier I guess. Not what one would expect from a self professed liberal like yourself, since liberals like to have people believe THEY are the sensitive and tolerant ones. I thought conservatives like myself were supposed to be the ones hurling insults and calling names

I just called three of my closest friends (all gay) and explained the above. They all said you are being too sensitive and that they see no offense in what I wrote.
Paul 37, said you were an ass
Alden 45 said, ah honey why would you even come to me with that. She is just silly
and Joe 33-what is she talking about, we use "gay" that way more than straight people do.
I'll still TRY to avoid offending you BNer but maybe you might re-think your own position.

Never gonna happen.
Look, Rita is truly a good person. I have seen first hand what she is about. Most could only hope to have such a loyal friend in their corner.
But unfortunately she tends to fall back on comfortable inclinations.
She is a wonderful woman, but she is also agenda driven.
Hey, my hat's off to her for her tenacity, but I also think it's bullshit.
Take all the feminist(and somewhat bullshit) trappings away, I would consider Rita to be one of the sweetest and most caring people I've ever met(online anyway). Thoughtful, caring, and most importantly extremely intellectual.
Ah, but those trappings..............

Jared--
The point is that on JC, you're not talking to openly gay friends of yours and you're not in the gay community. What you're doing is reinforcing and perpetuating a message in the outside world by using homosexuality as a putdown. I'm not talking about the specific words you used to mean homosexual.
I've said my piece, and I'm giving it and myself a rest.
