John Taylor - Rosslyn

Hi all, just picked this up a few days ago (mostly on a whim). Personnel are: John Taylor (p), Marc Johnson (b), Joey Baron (d). Fairly strong set, mostly slow to moderate tempi, Taylor's playing tends to leave lots of open spaces, very ruminative playing, and I like it. Johnson's work is excellent and his tone is wonderful. I always like Baron, although he's mostly fairly subdued here. I'd be curious to hear what other piano trio fans think of it. Was released back in February, I think.

Here's what Bob Brookmeyer has to say about this CD:

for some satisfying stuff, John Taylor's CD (with Mark Johnson and Joey Baron -- title:"Rosslyn") is an amazing accomplishment from a great trio. John is in top form and is downright scary. I had pretty much settled on Keith Jarrett for trio Jones, but this opens up a whole new world.

I'm quietly confident it's fantastic.

I think "Rosslyn" is superb. Taylor is a pianist deserving of far wider recognition. This is calm, lyrical music in a chamber-jazz sort of mood. The approach is emotionally cool (as in: reserved, quiet, deliberate, cerebral) but the sound of the instruments is warm.

All three musicians play gorgeously. Baron is amazing--very discreet but such presence and concentration. He has got to be the most brilliantly versatile drummer in existence. I can't think of another musician who succeeds so well in such a wide variety of contexts.
