Some would say mass hypnosis. I tend to think on the simpler term "group think". That is to say that if enough people say something ridiculous enough times, there are always those who think that if that's what "everybody" thinks, it must be true. So, rather than going to all the back-breaking trouble of actually thinking for themselves, or attempting to find out what is really true, they just believe other people, whether it's the truth or not.
Politicians prey on this laziness of the electorate all the time, which is why we end up with the leaders we have, making the dumb decisions that they make, IMO.
