My favorite guitarist as leader is Grant Green. I think he was the most sympathetic jazz guitarist I've ever heard.
But I have to admit the guitarist who engages me the most as a musician is Bill Frisell.

Not living: Tal Farlow or Hank Garland.
Living: Probably have to go with Metheny. I like Martino tons, but what I heard of Think Tank left me cold. I could go for Scofield, too. If we limited it to just one record, I might go with Benson for Beyond the Blue Horizon - probably my alltime fave jazz guitar record. Dr. Dave - you serious about Whitfield?
