McLaughlin still, after all (but specifically between the years 1969-72, possibly up to '75 if I'm feeling really magnanimous).

Self-imposed rule: Breathing guitarists only. So Jimmy Raney is out. Thus:

My favorite guitarist as leader is Grant Green. I think he was the most sympathetic jazz guitarist I've ever heard.

But I have to admit the guitarist who engages me the most as a musician is Bill Frisell.

Hard to say...I think I have equal affection for these diverse players:

Bill Frisell

Kenny Burrell

John McLaughlin

Pat Metheny

Breathing only?

I'd say Keith Rowe but to call him a guitarist is to miss the point, so ...

Not living: Tal Farlow or Hank Garland.

Living: Probably have to go with Metheny. I like Martino tons, but what I heard of Think Tank left me cold. I could go for Scofield, too. If we limited it to just one record, I might go with Benson for Beyond the Blue Horizon - probably my alltime fave jazz guitar record. Dr. Dave - you serious about Whitfield?
