My choice today: Stan Getz. It will no doubt be someone else tomorrow.

This thread doesn't make sense to me.
Best "solist" in a music who is mostly about solo...

Could be Trane, could be John McLaughlin, could be Max, could be just about anyone, depending on my mood and what I'm listening to.

The more I think about this, the more I think Mike Stern qualifies. Not many musicians can command your attention for 10 - 15 minutes like he does.

We could always venture off and interpret this as musicians who play in a solo setting.

Lacy? Braxton?

Sometimes his solos missed the mark. But man when they hit, WHEW!!! And either way, they are ALL fun to listen to.

Sisco - you have AMM's "Nameless Uncarved Block"?

much of it almost a drum/percussion concerto to my ears - Prevost is beyond brilliant - especially on the massive second track

fwiw - you would love Mark Sanders on The Two Seasons - he is very much coming out of Eddie in many ways - but he tedns more towards the threat of an ultimate groove - if I had a burner or knew how to use the one that may or may not be in my computer somewhere.....

and if a drummer named Nagel is reading this thread - hear some Mark Sanders someday before someday never comes

Strong Language, baby

I've never seen anything like that in my life. He played the first chorus, and during the second chorus still played the melody and played embellishments on it. I've never heard anybody do that. That was on alto. I'll never forget that experience."

Sonny Rollins here, too.

On a different level, but for pure soul Jimmy Forrest and Gene Ammons.

Others (depending on my mood and current inclinations): Jelly Roll, ArtTatum, Monk, Bernie McGann, Bird, Giuffre, Grant Green, Stan Turrentine, George Lewis (the clarinet cat).

Still Trane. (I'm surprised so many of you got it wrong.)

Tom Storer and Zephyr named the two I'd have to choose between:

Getz and Lacy.

Both so magnificent.

Trane...has to be...

Although Sonny Rollins (mid/late 50s/early 60s) and Harold Land (at his peak) ...mmm...

OK, TRANE!
