This might work. Then again, it might not:

David S. Ware --tenor saxophone
Sonny Fortune -- alto saxophone
Brian Lynch --- trumpet
Conrad Herwig --trombone
Mulgrew Miller --piano
Peter Washington -- bass
Lewis Nash -- drums
Leader and arranger: Jimmy Heath

There used to be "fantasy band" threads a long time ago. This could revive an honorable tradition.

I think this incarnation would work a bit better (and it's not beyond the realm of possibility, 'cept maybe for the Rowe/Tilbury contingent)

Here’s one that was tried, but fell flat ‘til Papa Joe switched to ivories.

Joe McPhee – tenor
Joe Maneri – tenor
Mat Maneri – electric violin
Ed Schuller – double bass
Randy Peterson – drums

And another variation that I’d like to hear (a CIMP project in the making?):

Joe McPhee – pocket trumpet
Joe Maneri – tenor, alto, clarinet, piano
Joe Giardullo – soprano, flute & bass clarinet
Dominic Duval – double bass
Michael Bisio – double bass
Randy Peterson - drums

Ray Anderson - trombone
Benny Goodman - clarinet
Artie Shaw - clarinet
Albert Ayler - tenor
Rudy Vallee - alto
Cecil Taylor - piano
Charles Mingus - bass
Buddy Rich - drums
Betty Carter - vocals

I give it one chorus!

Joe Lovano--tenor, soprano, bass clarinet
Pat Metheny--guitar
Charlie Haden-bass

Roy Campbell—trumpet
Steve Turre—trombone
David Murray—tenor, bass clarinet
Arthur Blyte--alto
James Newton—flute
William Parker—bass
Hamid Drake—drums

I actually assembled one of my dream bands, this all-star electronic 12tet, seven of the eleven MIMEO members plus three from Tokyo and two Swiss, for a few short pieces in my festival in Cologne last May:

Thomas Lehn
Marcus Schmickler
Cor Fuhler
Gert-Jan Prins
Pita
Christian Fennesz
Sachiko M
Otomo Yoshihide
Keith Rowe
Toshi Nakamura
Günter Müller
Norbert Möslang

pretty disappointing, all in all, most of the quartet sets worked decidedly better.

In general, "dream bands" that sound good on paper often disappoint, and probably the larger the greater the danger.

that's certainly true for jazz, not sure if it's the case for "eai" in general or not. the main problem with this was that it was only three short pieces, one each night, with not much discussion or focus beforehand.

but, yeah, there's a reason that the bulk of Erst releases are duos...

Whether i't true or not would probably depend on who the dreamer is.

I am not sure if two is a band. Please discuss among yourself. I am just mentioning this because I am not sure if the bulk of Erst releases is really relevant to this thread.

Going along with Jon's concept of cross-pollinization (and yes, I posted a list similar to this one elsewhere,) I think this band would be fun to watch.

Wynton Marsalis - Trumpet
Peter Brotzmann - Tenor Saxophone
Anthony Braxton - Alto Saxophone
Kenny G - Soprano Saxophone
Cecil Taylor - Piano
Ben Allison - Acoustic Bass
Guillermo E. Brown - Drums and Percussion
Toshimaru Nakamura - No Input Mixing Board
Diana Krall - Vocals

With a nod to Pete C, playing a composition by Buddy Rich.
