Favorite groan
out of all of the jazz musicians who groan while playing, which one has the best groan?
I say Elvin Jones.

My money's on Milt Buckner, esp. his sides with Buddy Tate, Arnett Cobb & Illinois Jacquet.

Lionel Hampton is another one easily identified after the first groan. He would be one of my favorite "unique groaner".

At first glance I thought Shrugs was asking about our favorite organ.

Not quite, although as you can see, we've addressed a similar topic already.

I like Jackie McLean's groans on One Step Beyond.

Billy Bang. I think "Commandment" -- his great solo album -- is the only one of the 12 Bang albums I have on which he can be heard groaning, but what's there is choice.

Errol Garner might be my all time fave, but other strong contenders have already been mentioned...
Junior Mance is cool too.

If they sound like groans, they are groans, no matter the context.

Keith Jarrett's is the most annoying, Lionel Hampton's the most ridiculous and Erroll Garner's the most constant.
Nevertheless I vote for Oscar Peterson. He can drown out 500 of his notes with one well-placed groan.

The most annoying is of course Jarret.

The problem with Jarrett is that he tries to pass those things off as somehow a natural part of his musical expression, as if they flow organically out of him during the music making process. Bullsh**. He's being a f**king prick is what he's doing. Pushing the envelope to see how much of that f**king horsesh** his audience will endure. I think he gets off on watching his audience humiliate itself into actually believing that it's for real, and not a slap in the face, which is what it really is. Anyone who has witnessed his condescending attitude towards his audiences during live performances should be able to figure that out.

Absolutely Larry. The thing is- you practice for years and years to get to that level of technical skill and be able to meticulously control every aspect of your body. This jerk is trying to tell us he can't control those annoying sounds, as if the music coming off his fingers is so amazing that he doesn't even notice it.
Anyway, I'll still listen to his music, because as annoying as he and his groaning are, the music is worth it.
Sam Rivers makes some hilarously joyful noises when he's not playing (or in between phrases sometimes), that gets my vote.

Yeah, I love it when Sam starts hollering "woot, woot" or something like that. Perhaps this can be seen as a predecessor for Little John?

Definitely! I'm a huge fan of Jarrett's music. Some of the best piano trio music I can think of.

that's why I like the Blue Note box so much. Jarrett's groaning is barely there.
Those cuts of Things Aint What They Used To Be are perfect.

Slam is marginally more musical, he does it in octaves, where Holley hums in unison, which I find makes a more turgid sound.
