Jazz in Philly: Ortlieb's

I'm planning a visit to Philadelphia this weekend, and I want to see Tim Warfield with Mickey Roker at Ortlieb's. What should I know before I go?

2 food tips:

Indonesia Restaurant (I think it's on 10th between Race & Arch, in Chinatown) has the best Indonesian food I've had in the U.S.

http://www.indonesiarestaurant.com/index1.htm

Cuba Libre, on S. 2nd St, just south of Market (I think) is a beautiful place, that does a wonderful brunch. I had brunch there with Singin Sumo.

There's also Chris's Jazz Cafe, which is guitarist Jimmy Bruno's home base.

selflishly, dave, i say you should know to give mickey my love. i'm envious that you're going to hear him. as you probably already know, he's one of my very favorite drummers. ask him to do his impression of billy ekstine (off-stage)!! lol!! it's priceless!

best to you, dave. enjoy!

Roker is one of the unsung greats. I last saw him with Hank Jones, John Weber and a wonderful but obscure older guitarist named Eddie Diehl--for a $10 cover at Fat Cat Billiards.

That should be a good show, Dr. Dave. Warfield is an excellent player.

Are you driving in or taking the train?

Never mind. Never...fucking...mind.

Ortlieb's is in the Trinities, so we'll probably drive up from Center City. Thanks for the food recs.

Valerie: Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to convey your love. He's a terrific drummer, yes.

Remember, Philly is the "City of Brotherly Love", so if a couple of brothers on the street ask you for the time, save them some trouble and just hand over your watch.

But seriously, there should be safe on-street parking in Ortliebs' vicinity. There may even be a public park-and-lock available.

There are also a lot of fine Middle Eastern restaurants in the Olde City area.

Hope you enjoy the show and have a nice time in Philly, Dr. Dave!

Dave, when Patti and I were in Philadelphia a few years ago we visited Chris' Jazz Cafe and had a great time with the Phil Giardano Jazz Orchestra practically in our face. Great stuff. Also, subbing for the usual pianist that night was a young cat who really blew us away... George Burton. If he's playing anywhere, don't miss him! The only reference to Burton I could find was to a gig with his quartet at Ortlieb's on January 27th with saxophonist Jaleel Shaw.

This Friday night, the Jimmy Bruno Trio with special guest Richie Cole is at Chris' Jazz Cafe. It's not an elegant place, but very comfortable and unpretentious. The food wasn't bad when we were there, either. Validated parking is available for the Midtown Parking Garage (next door), but check to make sure when they close. We almost got in a jam.

Here's a Philly jazz newsletter which may come in handy now or in the future.

Though things may get hot inside the club, it's going down to 22 F on Friday night in Philly, so you may find it a few degrees cooler than you're used to south of the Manson-Nixon line, Dr. Dave.

Sounds like a great night for jazz in Philly! Jimmy Bruno and Richie Cole vs. Tim Warfield and Mickey Roker? Maybe I can catch a set of each!

Or, you could catch an entire evening of each if you hit Chris' Jazz Cafe on Friday night and Ortlieb's on Saturday. Warfield and Roker are playing Fri. and Sat., but Bruno and Cole only Friday.

Thank you, Groover, for the most important information of all.

Ron: I have sworn a holy Oath that none of my money will ever find its way into the coffers of Richie Cole. It's a long story. But thanks for the newsletter link and the advice on Chris'.

Whoa!

You're welcome. Have a great weekend. Don't forget to keep an eye and ear out for pianist George Burton. I can't overemphasize how impressed I was with his playing at his young age.

Okay, here's the type of helpful hints I was hoping for, Pete:

Ortlieb's doesn't sell tickets. What it does is take table reservations for dinner. You no eat, you no get reservation. There's a $12 cover and a $10 "food" minimum.

Having never been to Ortleib's Jazzhaus, I can't provide a definitive answer to reservation-type questions, but one of these contacts should prove helpful.

Tel: (215) 922-1035
Fax: (215) 922-7367
Email: psouders@comcast.net

Oh, and if you're thinking of having dinner there, there's a buy one entrée, get the next for ½ price coupon on their website, which you can print out.

And so it came to pass. He played "Autumn Leaves" and managed to work in a little bit of Jobim's "Waters of March." He played "Cottontail," which by itself was an act of loving courage (who the hell else would play it and not treat it like a museum piece?), and included a little bit of "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid" for pianist Sid Simmons. He played a blues. The crowd was determined to talk over the music. I objected loudly and obscenely, as is my wont, but only once, and even got some applause for it, and then just tuned the little motherfuckers out after that.

Thanks to Valerie Bishop, I had an excuse to talk a little bit with Mickey Roker; talk about somebody who has been there and done that! Damn!

I love jazz music.

For a TRUE Philadelphia experience, you need to eat a TASTYKAKE, and not some wannabe Hostess product.

I've been to Cuba Libre a couple of times--EXCELLENT. They've apparently now opened another one in Atlantic City.

I've been to Chris' Jazz Cafe once--definitely need to go back. The food was pretty good, also.

If you like Asian food, check out Indonesia restaurant and Vietnam Restaurant, both in Chinatown.
