John McLaughlin.
I also like Goody's choice of Watanabe, but I consider his countryman Masoyoshi Takanaka to be slightly better.

Ryo Kawasaki is another good one.

I'll go with McLaughlin--especially in light of hearing Miles' A Tribute To Jack Johnson for the first time this weekend to add to the fine Mahavishnu Orchestra and solo recordings I have.

Among younger guys I like David Fiuczynski a lot.

John McLaughlin, though Al DiMeola is always impressive

Larry Coryell is another one worth mentioning, but he doesn't measure up to McLaughlin either.

I didn't know Pat Martino was considered fusion. He's got incredible skills.

Is Metheny fusion? If so, he'd definitely be a contender, but I don't consider a lot of his stuff, such as 99=>00, to be fusion.

I'll mention Holdsworth just to put his name out there.

Holdsworth is pretty great. He has collaborated with the late John Stevens on a few of his more jazz orientated discs. I enjoy some of Al Di Meola's work as far as fusion is concerned.

My two cents:

There are a lot of great Jazz Rock Fusion guitarists such as:

Shawn Lane
Kazumi Watanabe
Bill Connors
John Abercrombie
Allan Holdsworth
Fareed Haque
John Scofield
Robben Ford
Nguyen Le
Gerald Gradwohl
and the great(s) Scott Henderson, Jeff Beck, and Mike Stern.

But, there is only one guitarist that IS fusion: John McLaughlin

I also think that anyone on this list would agree.

Arguably, one of the very first fusion recordings involving a guitarist, also involved a pal o' mine, the late Jim Pepper and Larry Coryell. Jim and Larry were to have many other sessions over the years.

"Pepper's Pow Wow".Embryo SD 731 (distributed by Atlantic Records).

Now a rare collector's item, this LP is perhaps the most heard-about and least heard of all of Pepper's recordings. It was produced by Herbie Mann and released in 1971, receiving much acclaim on the strength of 'Witchi Tai To" (which had been recorded previously). All of the compositions were based on Native themes, even though some are musically more akin to the country-western tradition (e.g. "Drums" with Pepper's Johnny Cash-style vocal). Prominent players include Jim's dad, Gilbert and then-wife, Ravie, along with Tom Grant, Larry Coryell and Billy Cobham, among others. Pepper was at once proud of, and unhappy about, this session and the circumstances surrounding it; he left the New York music scene in disillusionment in 1971, not to return for 11 years.

I can't disagree with the many votes for John McLaughlin, though.

I think early McLaughlin is great, but haven't found his later music to be very exciting. Coryell is still producing interesting music and (unlike my one live experience with McLaughlin) has been thrilling live.

It's Pat Martino, you ding-dong. Although I suppose the confusion is possible.

Oh, and McLaughlin, of course. Almost every fusion guitarist owes him.
